I remember trying to read the Melbourne Herald (a broadsheet) on the old red rattlers going home from work!!! Had to fold it up into little squares, then my dad used to get upset because the paper was "ruined"!

I was a Daily Tele reader on the Sydney red rattlers. And the Mirror on the return trip. The paper cost 6d back then. I did that for many years. Boring!!!

I think that it's more likely that crowds cause anti-social behaviour. I've noticed that people are far more likely to interact if there are only a small number present. Too many others around and we seem to feel the need to guard our "personal space".
