Can any GN's help with recommending a suitable aircon for
my 6.35mt. Coromal Lifestyle van.It currently has a Dometic B3000
fitted that has already been replaced under warranty because it
would'nt go below 26deg. the new one is not much better.Previously
had an AirCommand Ibis which was okay .Any suggestions please
as I would like to purchase a good one before going North this year.

Just had our 5 year old Ibis replaced with a new Ibis. Read a lot on the forum (search Air Conditioners for threads). Some where saying go to an Air Conditioner place and get them to install a Split System. It may be feasible in a M/H but we replace like with like until we get a new van hopefully mid next year. Cost fitted, delivered to Esperance was just under $2600 but gee, when the temp is high 30's, it works a treat.

I must admit after having my Dometic air con./Reverse cycle unit fitted at near $3K and it breaking down just after warranty ran out have been disappointed generally.
Breakdown was one of the two temp probes and at $106 for a new one which consisted of a small thermo-couple and eight inches of twin core wire with a small computer plug. Seems very excessive for a small part. I luckily have the expertise to fit it myself so saved hundreds in labour costs.
On the whole I would prefer from the reports on here and other forums that the Ibis appears to be the better unit.
I was looking at replacing my water heater with a Dometic/Waeco,unit now looking at a Suburban instead after recent trials and tribulations with Waeco/Dometic products.
My own personal problems with said products.

A thread in Techie's Corner "using a house window mount air con unit" Jan. 04/14 that may help.

Ok You asked for Information..
Here goes..
A domestic[House] type System is far cheaper to buy and get installed when Compared to an RV type Air-con. - BB commented that he Cost fitted, delivered to Esperance was just under $2600 but gee, when the temp is high 30's, it works a treat.
Me If I had the Option I would go with Split system.. The current location replace it with a Vented Hatch and install the Air- con Compressor unit on the back of the Van..
- Draws Less current than the RV type's..
Look this opinion is Mine.. I know it's how I'm going and I know of other that are doing the same thing..

I'm curious as to the failure mode of the thermocouple. Did it corrode?

Hi Dorian,
I have no idea what caused the temp probe/thermocouple to expire. Just stopped working and I replaced the one at the rear of the unit.It has the temp probe slid into a slightly larger tube and then the wire was cable tied on. Turned out it was the front one so I just used the one I took out and reassembled the unit after also cleaning the fan.
No visible corrosion on either the working one or the failed one.

We put a New Ibis in our 9.8mtr bus about 6mths ago and couldn't be happier....
We now have a different bus and wouldn't even consider using anything else...
WHY you ask
Ease of installation.
Compact size.
Very little loss of internal roof clearance.
Low outside profile.
Self supporting as it sits on the roof..
The original cost isn't an issue if the product works, just be sure you buy from an authorised dealer and not a reseller..
