Charlton in North Central Victoria makes a determined effort to attract tourists. On the Calder highway between Bendigo & Mildura.
They have provided a Travellers Rest with under cover tables & seats, toilets, playground & ample parking for all sized vehicles on the banks of the Avoca River.
Behind the travellers rest is the ensuite site caravan park... easy access & only $25 per night.
Over the river from there is the traditional caravan park, powered sites are $15 per night. Set up on the banks of the river with old but well maintained & clean showers & toilets. Unpowered sites are available here too but I'm not sure of the cost.
Behind the ensuite caravan park is an area set aside for self contained motorhomes & caravans. This area is completely free.
All of this is almost in the middle of town, close to pubs, shops, PO, coffee shops, bakery etc. Don't miss the REX theatre.
NB: Charlton is my home town , let me know if you are nearby & if I'm around I will catch up.
The town was innundated in the floods of 2011 & is still recovering, so every dollar spent is much appreciated.

It's a wonderful town unspoilt populated with real Aussies.
There's some awesome architecture and stately homes.
When we were last there the river was bone dry but I hear the fish are back now.
Cheers

Next time you are there, look out for the free herb garden which has been provided for the traveller. Rosemary, mint, sage, thyme, sweet basil and even 6 strawberry plants.
