What kind of life span are people getting from their wireless modem's
I have just had the sixth fail in four yrs.

I,ve had my telstra nextg wireless for four years.It does play up , and doesn,t like being touched when online , but overall its reliable, better than the phone tethering modem I was trying. Will try to stay with the Telstra modem. Bill

I just use my iPhone as a modem JC, I use my iPad or Lap Top via the iPhone connection. Never had a problem, yet anyway.

Power surges are modems biggest enemy..
The best way to protect them is to disconnect them anytime there is electrical storms in your area..
We have ALL of our computer related equipment serviced by one power point and whenever there is any electrical storms about we turn it all off and unplug it..
we do have a power surge board but we don't trust it all the time ...

Hi, I bought a Telstra pre-paid wireless broadband USB modem back in March 2009 and it's still going strong. It gets used whenever we're on the road and so far I haven't had any problems with it (touch wood), works well.

Hi Jim, we have had a wireless modem Router for at least two years with no hassles at all. We don't take any special steps to protect it except if there is any storm activity around I disconnect the aerial as we run any external aerial all the time. I would recommend them anytime. They are about $49 now compared to the $120 we first paid for ours. You can take it stand alone with you without any aerial. If we go visiting we take a little 3G whip aerial that just sits on a table.

We have the telestra mobile one. Had the first one give up the ghost while travelling a year of so back..... took it to the telstra shop and no one could fix it without "sending it away". Tried 3 different outlets, and still no one could help. In disgust, bought a new one.
When we got home, s-i-l the techno guru simply reset it, and now it works, so we have 2.

Oh yes, that jolts the memory, we did have it stall not long after we bought our modem router and the Telstra tech showed us how to reset, which we have had to do again since! That could well be the problem, your provider should be able to show you how to do that if yours has that capacity...

My ISP (using the Optus network) provided me with a Huawei wireless modem a couple of years ago that I use every day. No problems so far.

These have always been run through a Belkin power surge unit, never on during a storm & only power up when in use, turned off at the wall other times.
No smoke Rod, just fade away with low signal & stop, while mobile signal is good .
1x usb stick,3 weeks

Now have the 4G Advanced.

I've been using the Telstra wi-fi modem continuously for 18 months now, both at home and travelling (telstra wireless is the only provider at my home anyway). Prior to that I had a Telstra Sierra wireless dongle for 4 years. When out in the playground I only run mine on 12volt. Maybe that helps when it comes to surge protection.
You really do seem to having an unusual run of bad luck with them. Perhaps try using your smartphone as a wifi hotspot instead. Most phones don't mind a bumpy ride now and then!

Used a telstra modem for a couple of years when travelling, then got a dongle which requires no power and used an optus dongle when in cities as it was cheaper. Our quad band Huawei smart phones using android cost less than $100 each and covers both telstra and optus frequencies. When amysim came out, we changed from optus to them which saved even more and discovered when travelling we were getting optus signals every where telsra was and places telstra wasn't. Checked their coverage and it had expended dramatically. So dumped telstra and saved nearly $50 a month, now we have great signals every where we go and the dongle never fails, mind you telstra still has better coverage in some places, as does optus. Places there is no signal at all, we enjoy the peace and quiet of being disconnected from the world for awhile.
Now we have Orbot on our android phones, which gives us freedom and excellent security, far beyond anything else available. Can also use Tails on our phones running it from a usb stick, this gives us complete anonymity on line, which means no hacking, no spying and no idea where or who we are. We can even see if anyone tries to break into our system and it fools middle man attacks, which are used by security services, corporate hackers and spammers. Loaded it into a friends telstra/windows phone and he was amazed at how many different entities were watching and locked into his system unknown to him, which is very common thing with microsoft and apple products. .

gee ya dont have much luck with em a jim my old telstra stick died awile ago but i dont think it liked being dropped in a muddy puddle and the one we had at dikbran bridge is still goin strong and you know how my stuff gets treated at work im lucky to get a mth out of my laptop or stick . the screen on my lappy looks like a rat chewed it lmdo
