I have a rear view camera on my van and use RCA plugs to connect between the van and the tow vehicle, now for the second time with replaced fittings I have had a wire break away on the tug end. the plug is held in a bracket and I have used a fairly heavy multi strand wire I am wondering if there is another plug that i can use more effectively than an RCA plug
Any help would be appreciated.

This may be a dumb question; but is there enough wire to allow for 'stretch' when turning or am I on the wrong track?

thanks for your response Keith the lead for the Camera is attached to the caravan wiring 12 pin plug cable with an extra length that would allow for a bit more than turning stretch so this should not be an issue but I will double check.

Now I'm confused - is the connection between the van and the tug via an RCA plug and socket or through the 12 pin plug?

This has got me 'ordinary'. Next dumb question; are the individual cores fully tightened in the respective sockets? I can't think of anything else. Maybe some more technically minded (which is pretty much everyone) person here can solve this.

Tape (wrap) the camera cable to the (stiffish) caravan cable and then attach the camera wires to spare pins in the van plug. Next at the tug end, connect the monitor wires to the corresponding pins you've used for the camera.
The reasoning behind this is that the caravan cable is pretty stiff and does not flex much. At the tug end there is no flex as the wire is in the socket. With 12 pins you should have a few spares.
I think it would work.

The Camera lead is connected using an RCA plug and socket, I have taped the wires from the van camera onto the outside of the Van 12 pin plug and wiring loom so that it was supported then near the plug the wiring for the camera separates and goes to a separate RCA socket.
I thought about running it through the 12 pin plug but was told I would pick interference as I run the van fridge on 12 volt whilst travelling and possible interference from indicators and stop lights I am open to advice from experienced members on this one

RCA plugs should not be used for exterior fittings, go to Jaycar and tell them what you have and seek their advice, they will have what you need, maybe even tricky dickie will have something.

Mate of mine has a reversing camera and two side cameras on his van and connects to the tug via a 7 pin plug and socket that are bolted onto the A frame and the tug with and extension cord between them - he's had it like that without a problem for a couple of years now.

Our camera is connected through the 12way plug with all the other electrics and we have no interference at all.
