I received a letter in the mail from my bank saying that if I didn't go in.
The money in an account that I had would be transferred to the Government.
WENT into the bank today.
The account that I had forgotten I had
Had a not insubstantial amount of money in it.
WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO

We were told that you only have to withdraw or deposit a very small amount to make your account active - someone in the bank told us to take $1 out and put it back in again, and this would do the job - we do internet banking.

Yes, I've heard of this happening. How many years does it have to be inactive? Our bank said it wouldn't happen to term deposits. I hope they're right. I presume so, because the interest keeps getting put in.

My account had been inactive for 3 years. The bank teller deposited a hypothetical dollar then withdrew it. My account is now active. She couldn't believe that I had forgotten such an amount. Neither could I !!!!!!!!!!! Will now spend the weekend planning what I will buy with my windfall Doing my Happy Dance

One of Rudd/Gillards little booby traps. Any account with less than $6,000 that is inactive, excludes bank fees/charges, for 3 years is gone. I had a small superannuation that went poof and the mongrels then told me it had gone. At least they could tell you that it is going to go and give you a chance to do something.

That's despicable. Every bank account has a tax file number attached to it. All that the Government would need to do to determine whether the ACCOUNT HOLDER was still active would be to consult his or her income tax returns.

That is so true Dorian but what about the money that was given to nearly everyone to boost the economy - I think it went o/s and also to people that had passed away - great cross checking!! Good on you Kaid to have that windfall. happy camping

If you have money float off into the government coffers I believe you can apply to have it returned
