Does anyone know what to do to increase the towing capacity when towing caravan with 4.2lt TD Nissan patrol, cab chassis?

Yes , you have to get the GCM upgraded , this requires a chassis mod , authorised by a signatory engineer , we have had ours upgraded to the same as the 3.0 patrol..... GCM upgraded from 5800 to 6200 kg (numbers from memory - too lazy to go out in the cold to check) , this allows towing upgrade from 2500 to 2900 kg ... were then issued with new VIN from Dept of Infrastructure (WA) ... noted on insurance policy

Thanks for that lizard, do you remember what the $$$'s were to have that done.
We are thinking of getting a Bushtracker (2ND Hand) but we still be in trouble as the ATM is 3000kg.

May vary a bit between States. Transport Depts are state funded/controlled and are free to interpret and dispense the State Road Traffic Act and Motor Vehicles Act according to their 'flavour of the month'. This means costs will vary and the method. Thankfully they're slowly getting closer to unification and generally run parallel, but then there's Queensland! They're still trying to push the railway tracks further apart! Good vehicle. Do it!

No the cab-chassis ute has a lower towing (2500 kg) because of the carrying capacity increases the GVM , so reducing the GCM . So have to increase the GCM to increase the towing ....
formula is GCM minus GVM = towing capacity
GCM is Gross Combined Mass

The only chassis/cab Patrol with more than 2500 kgtow capacity is the 3.0 l manufactured from 10/2007.
