You posted while I was typing. It could very well be the 230V element as your suggest. My original reply to your post is below.
Where are you? If the temperature in the wall cavity of the van is any higher than around 34 degrees C, then the RM2553 won't get cold no matter how well it has been installed. OJ

thanks John
We are at Pardoo station b/w Broome and Hedland for another 5 weeks at least - it was about 34 here today but I suspect that it stopped during the night as the freezer contents were well thawed by 2.30pm
After we ran it on gas for 1/2 an hour (started to freeze) we tried it again on 240v and it started to defrost straight away. We have been in hot weather before without any problems

Cooler bag with ice in the fridge did me for some months, just need to keep replacing the wet towels as the ice melts. Is it getting hot on the coils at the rear? Is the gas light on and does it go up and down when adjusting the thermostat. Night time is best to see that.
Best of luck, cost me >$600 to get that fixed.

You could try giving the agents a call Jenny and Barry, here is a list of them, see below the map and the contact details of the agents up your way. Maybe they can offer a clue as to what the problem might be...
Is there any such thing as a fuse on them anywhere for 240V?

I had a similar problem a couple of months back and it turned out to be the heater element. A visit to the Dometic Agent in Townsville and all sorted and under warranty.

I wish to extend my apology to all, especially the OP. I had a seniors moment commenting on the fridge. The RM2553 is the 150Lt model (I Have one in my own van) and if correctly installed should handle just any temperature the Gods can throw at it, up to around 44c. It's the small 90 - 110Lt models (And many earlier larger models) that suffer when it starts to warm up. Cheers, Ozjohn.
yay - grandkids and fridge element ($120 from Perth Caravan Repairers) arrived by plane in Port Hedland yesterday - Back to Pardoo , element installed and yes its all working again on 240v (thank God and Ron for his help and advice)

The $600 was for the whole back coils and system being replaced.

$600 seems like a ripoff.
