Stayed at the above free camp 45 mins south of Taree the other day and what a find, very nice beside a river, no facilities at all so you have to be fully self contained, no signs saying time limits, Telstra cover was good.

Will only get better when the bypass is completed. Although no facilities, the (small) town is only just across the bridge.

The bypass is in operation already as far as I know. A mate lives up that way and said it is great.

Stayed two nights there last week. Lots of people pulling in for the night.
It is now being run by the local Lions Club and there is a donation box near the rubbish bins.
I hope everyone is making a contribution to help them maintain and improve this great location on the Pacific Highway.
Every "free" camping spot has to be maintained by someone, so let's help them as much as we can by leaving some gold coins in the box.

Stayed at this site on 3rd,4th Jan.2015 great location. The only down side was the bombastic ranger. The site would have had 20 caravans staying but only 2 motor homes. He threatened with large fines [$4000] vans with buckets under drains. He says we are not self contained even though we transferred it into drums to take with us.[most of us.] If the town wants continuing support it would be nice to be treated with a courteous warning instead of a threat pending fine. Hope the Lions Club and businesses who have done a great job are not too disadvantaged by this one egotitstic person.

The campsite time is 72hrs, self contained vehicles only. The site is under refurbishment at the moment. The site will come back bigger and better than ever. Please use the donation box, don't set up right next to the only water tap and don't camp under or southern side of bridge. I live in this town and know how hard the Lions Club has worked on this site to the benefit of travelers and the town.
