I loved the post about what is the purpose of a gearbox, it's so wonderful how people's imagination works and how we all see things in different ways, especially being technically minded (sometimes technical bod's look too deep for an answer.......... SOL!! You'd agree with that eh??)

Rather than try to explain things in a few words, there is a good site "How stuff works." here is their bit on differentials. There is a few pages of reading that will give you a good grasp of things. The site will tell you how most things in a car works.
