Qld government is going to introduce speed camera usage to private enterprise to operate them, recon it will free up the police to do other duties...Me thinking this could become a red haring....

NSW already does this. It's called revenue.

We were heading north (in NSW) the other day and saw many police cars plus a couple of cars gave us the 'flash the lights' signal - that turned out to be for one of the private speed cameras. It was a car sitting on the side of the road with the small warning sign only a few metres from it. As JC says 'revenue'. But they didn't get any from us.

The story is that they are supposed to reduce the death toll but all they have done is replace death duties, and proved that another politician lied to get elected the NSW Premier promised prior to being elected that he would get rid of the revenue only cameras but he now has more fixed and mobile revenue raisers.
Being dishonest does pay you get to be Premier of a great State.

So does the fines go up to cover ,what these private firms charge the government.Or do the government just lose revenue that would have gone into the Gov coffers? Also in QLD they have just announced that the speed limit will be set as not to have a few ks over waved.

Gday...
Don't get me wrong but isn't the simple answer not to speed ??
I am sorry to say, that these days with the volumes of traffic on the roads and the condition of many roads any one who is speeding deserves to be pinged ... and it is not an excuse to say I didn't notice I was doing over 60 in a 60zone for instance ... concentration is what the driver is supposed to do.
If no-one exceeded the speed limits there would be no government revenue for you all to be concerned about.
It ain't too hard to stay at or below the speed limit ... geez, almost every car has cruise control these days as well.
Cheers - John

Queensland police have said that the few KPH leeway will be reduced because the cameras are capable of tighter accuracy. Police have said that the only reason some leeway was allowed prior is because the 'system' was overloaded with possible tickets.
It is about revenue. Queensland like other States cannot afford the infrastructure necessary for the over-population caused by over-enthusiastic immigration targets of federal governments. New records have been set annually for many years.

WOW what a long bow you have drawn on this topic. Who wooda thunk State Govts did it for that reason.
In Melbourne, the Ring Road alone attracts $43MILLION! each year from speeding fines .... is that the government seeking revenue or just dopes not watching their speedos or not caring??

I really have an issue with people blatantly speeding particularly when the speed is excessive, more than 10k's over, but I believe that we are now experiencing many more minor nose to tail accidents because people are now so obsessed with their speedo's that they are not concentrating on what they should be that is the traffic in front, and are clock watching.
Yes a large majority of cars have cruise control but in heavy traffic that isn't an answer and many cruise controls can balloon up a few k's over dips and rise's which can put you slightly over. I think that given all speed measuring devices have some inaccuracies in them, there should be at least a 5kph grace area to allow for that and inadvertent speeding that can and does happen for one reason or another. I think the average speed cameras are a much fairer way of detecting those amongst us who deliberately speed and do so at a considerable margin over the limit, rather than a spot check that catches people who have been doing the right thing but for one moment have exceeded the limit by 5kph due to concentrating on something other than their speedo.

I use the cruise control often in 40 to 60 zones as long as there isn't too much traffic but as said above it doesn't help on dips & rises so I look at the speedo instead of out the window!

On the subject of where the money goes I did a quick search of what happens in WA, and over here all speeding revenue goes into the Road Trauma Fund for driver education and road safety features. Also the link below shows the questions and answers that were asked in Parliament about the revenue and the number of speed cameras here. Thought it was very interesting.
Oh and I did get fined 2 weeks ago for going over in a 40kph zone (roadworks with no-one around) but "did the crime, pay the fine".

The thing to remember is this.
The operators of the speed cameras in Australia were kicked out of the USA.
They were kicked out because they were caught modifying results and adjusting the equipment to get more bookings.
They were caught out because in the USA there are laws where anyone can dispute and see evidence of any equipment used.
In Australia we have no such guarantee, the Gruberment and the R&M are laws unto themselves.
They make the rules and we have no choice.
Dont believe me?
When your car is booked for going past a speed camera, you have two choices
Pay the fine or disclose who was driving your car.
This is a breach of Innocent until proven guilty rights.
The grubberment is addicted to speeding revenue.
But we are told the $geed $Cameras are there to stop people speeding.
But every year the budget for an increase in speeding fine revenue.
This means they know speeding will not and is not changed by the introduction of $greed $cameras.
So;
Is the real objective to raise revenue?
Or to stop speeding.
If its to stop speeding, then they are the consummate idiots.
For as we know
DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS IS THE DEFINITION OF STUPIDITY.
Is our grubberment crooked or idiots?
Ill say BOTH

They set the system up for failure.
Multiple continually changing speed zones.
Variations on variations, hidden speed signs, different times of the day and that little beauty 40k when there is flashing lights.
I have 16 speed zones in the 10 klm from my home to the freeway, 20 when school zones are on.
and the $greed $camera car sets up on the downhill run on a regular basis.
Funny, I have "broken down" directly behind it three times so far.
Really pisses him off, but legally there is nothing he can do about it (other than complain bitterly that is)
He got the cops once and I explained that my car just "died" and this was the best spot to sop safely.
When I tried the car again it miraculously started, it were a miracle it were.
The cops had no argument, how could they prove anything, and I simply stated my version of the facts.
Would be interesting in court, but it will never get there.
I also flash all drivers when I see a $camera car.
