Those people who prefer their news, forum updates, blogs, etc to be delivered in a concise, speedy format might like to consider RSS feeds. Many browsers support RSS feeds, but one could also use dedicated feed reader software.
For example, the following might prove useful for FaceBook addicts.
As a very basic 'puter user, I have no idea what-so-ever what an RSS Feed even is Dorian. I'm sure I'm not alone there.
Cheers,
Sheba.

No, you're not alone Sheba. But I guess I could look it up and find out.

It said it was "RSS" is about getting live web feeds directly to your computer.
Don't think I'm much the wiser!

Instead of going to the main web site and seeing a page full of ads, banners, popups, etc, you can use RSS to download the news items in a concise format. Wouldn't you prefer to see the daily news items as a list of clickable headlines without all the "monetising" fluff? Most news sites will make you download 1MB or more of rubbish before you even start to see any content. RSS avoids all that.

Don't read the news on-line anyway. Can't afford that luxury.
Cheers,

RSS is used for much more than just news. In fact I use this forum's RSS feeds to view new posts. But then I'm the sort of guy who likes to watch TV with the ads muted. (The football also sounds better with the commentary muted)

Sheba, it's not just news, its any update to any web site that has an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed that you can subscribe to. This site doesn't have one that I can see but many do and it just saves you the hassle of having logging into individual sites to see if there's anything new and of interest.
To get the other feeds, just substitute the ForumID in the URL.

Thanks Mr. D., and Dorian, but all that stuff just confuses me more. I really am a dummy tech-wise.
Cheers,
Sheba.

I use Opera, so I can't give any first hand advice on IE or Firefox.
When Opera finds an RSS link on any page, it gives me an RSS symbol in the address bar. I click on the symbol and then I see all the feeds for this page, plus a Subscribe button. Clicking on this button adds the selected feed to my list. To access a particular feed, I select it from the menu by clicking "Feeds", and a dropdown list appears with all my subscriptions. BTW, subscriptions are free.
Alternatively, I can manually add a feed by typing its URL after selecting Feeds -> Manage Feeds -> Add.

Been using RSS threads for this and other similar sites now for some time. It saves lots of time and trouble, not to mention the time on line, trolling through all the posts to find and get to the new ones. Would highly recommend using the facility and commend Dorian for bringing it to everyones attention. You really don't need much if any tech savvy to set it up as Dorian has shown.
