sorry just having a rant I have posted on here in the recent past about our small business being sent under by so called family,, well i guess i'm over that, or as over it as one can be,, so I went to allpy for a part time job as I didn't really want to work full time anymore for the time being anyway...so in order to be considered for said postion "you'll have to have a medical"" oh ok well not so bad i guess,,, Nurse... "I have to examine your motor function" Tony... "v8 out on my car just pop the bonnet right there in front of you"" silence ( no sence of humor apparently) Nurse.. I want you to squat as far down as you can and walk like a duck" Tony..stunned look "are you kidding me"
I know i'm getting old and maybe a bit slow but what job has a job description that requires someone to "squat and walk like a duck"well after completeing said task i quietly got up and left, before i said anything that i shouldn't have I know that the poor girl is only doing her job and i felt sorry for her having to put up with my "out burst" and i will call today to apologise for that,, but really BIG brother, in my view, is going to far,, however I did find out that I am able to squat and walk like a duck,,not sure if I'll ever need this new found skill or not but it's there just in case......so endeth my rant for today

Maybe the job - part time or otherwise - requires mobility ... eg squatting to get low items etc.
I seem to recall that to get a job on many of the wheat and cotton properties during harvesting, the medical required has much the same rigmarole.
Get a fruit or vegie harvesting job ... no medicals for that one ... but it will test out most of ya muscles anyway

yep, I have done a many a medical, and they all do the same thing. I think its a way to find undeclared issues and to test mobility / agility , as we have had many a person not declaring conditions until after they then present themselves to first aid after a few days, and then have a tried a compo claim within the first month, or haven't declared things like a prosthetic.
And there are multiple areas where I work, that to squat and walk like a duck is the best method to gain entry, due to size and wet / dirty floors and walls, or to access waste bins under machinery.

I had to do medicals to get carers jobs too, but that's understandable.

But in all seriousness, this BB rubbish is getting out of control. I think it has a lot to do with litigation these days. Companies are scared that someone will start in a position with an undisclosed health issue which will end up causing financial problems for the company when the employee says in court that it's been exacerbated by the job.
I've been asked in the past if I had any medical problems that would make me unfit for a certain position and I lied. I do have skeletal injuries from a MVA when I in my late teens. It sometimes causes me grief, but it could just have easily prevented me from getting a job, so I lied. I didn't have to take a medical test, but there is a possibility that the condition would have become evident if I did take a test and I'd be without work. That would have mean either a disability pension as the least worse scenario or years on Newstart as on the receiving end of programs that do absolutely nothing to get you into work and indeed cause you to spend some or all of your precious Newstart money getting to and from said useless programs.
You might look at me in an unfavourable light for lying to my employer, but I uphold strong principles and if ever my skeletal injuries ever caused me to have problems in carrying out my work, I would never try to blame the company. I did it. I wear it is my motto. Litigation is ruining this once great country of ours!

well i'm sorry but i fail to see what squatting and walking along like a god dam duck has to do with standing by a road side directing traffic and this was pointed out to the so called health professional at the time,,,, now becasue I disclosed thgat i was a type 2 dieabetic I now have to under go a blood test to show the results of my blood sugar levels which i test every day twice a day but no thats not good enough it has to be a docotors report,, another cost,,,again I'm sorry but this is red tape gone out of control and to me it's just plain arse covering and nothing more.. all for a part time position too,,I'll tell you something this is the last time it'll ever happen to me thats for sure,,a part time position just isn't worth the stress this crap is causing

Unfortunately some of these conditions of employment have come about because people did not disclose medical conditions that may impact upon there ability to perform the duties of the position. When said person is then laid off Centrelink may demand that the person pursue compensation if they feel the injury has been exacerbated by the duties of said position.
I have recently (10 months ago) started some part time work. When I started work I disclosed all my medical issues as I knew there would be days I may not be capable of working (it is not physical work). On the occasion when I feel I can't work for the day, they have been excellent and as embarrassed as I feel about it they have no issues and say they knew there may be days 'like this" and have never failed to pay me for my days off, not that there are that many.

The duck impression is not a new one, I had to do that when I joined the RAAF back in 1972. It probably shows up any hip, knee or ankle problems you may have too.

You have to be up front with people then it's up to them. Treat employers fairly and I find that in the majority of cases they will treat you likewise. It has carried me thru my working life although at times in large organisations I have had to deal with the odd little "tinpot general", even though in all cases the organisations themselvelves were quite progressive. I actually had one middle manager say once that "if my staff dislike me, it means I'm doing my job" (may have thought he was General Patton). No accounting for some peoples" idea of management. And yes I have been on all sides of the employee/manager/employer equation.

Just got me wondering,,what happens if some one happened to fail these medicals? Would they put you onto the Disability pension ?? As if your not fit enough to work is that not what this type of pension is for.?? With what you have had to go through makes one wonder what stringent medical they will bring in to retain your driving license what we reach 75....And I thought the medical was tough to work in the mines.But maybe this is the way all medicals to get a job now are structured.

well this is what happened,,,,,,, the job I went for and got too by the way is a part time one which is just what i wanted,, doing traffic control that is direction traffic and setting out saftey cones/signs etc on or near road works, now to get this PART TIME job i had to have a drug and booze test and a medical,, ok so i don't do drugs and I don't drink or smoke, so i had no worries there and I am whole heartdly in agreeance with the drug and booze testing, ok so i go into the testing place here in Adelaide,, 15 pages of questions, about my past medical history, no real big deal, or so I thought, answered NO to most of the questions, and that folks was my down fall I should have not been so honest and I should have answerd NO to everything,, the one question I maked YES i am a type 2 diabetic on a small dose of insulin each day , sugar levels are well managed with this and diet....NOT GOOD ENOUGH, oh we need a full doctors report from your doctor showing test results from the past 6 , which as of today the 30th I'm still trying to get from my doctor who is being less than helpfull,,, NOW comes the good part,,, apart from doing squarts and push-ups,, and I'm 56 i haven't done a push up since i don't know when,,and along with a sigh and hearing test and a range of mobility tests i had to squart and walk, like a duck the lengh of the room turn around and "waddle back again" Now if someone can tell me what the hell that has to do with , as my wife put it, standing on the side of the road holding a stick with a sign on the end of it,, that floks is why i was so p'eed offand the nurse doing all this also said and I quote" gee your blood pressue is a bit hi" no **** sherlock i wonder why....AND IT'S STILL NOT OVER THERE IS TILL MORE RED TAPE ,,, so as far as i am concerned it's just plain arse covering thats all it is no one wants to take responsability for their own actions and so everyone now has to cover their arse,, and it's only going to get worse, soon you'll need a medical or some sort of certification just to wipe your own backside in case you do it wrong and need to sue someone,, and to say we have a choise is crap becasue it is fast getting to the stage where the only choise you'll have is either do all this carp or not work,,, and then what do you do,, go on the dole and become a burden to society,,,,

There is no way anyone can condone taking out your personal frustrations on the nurse, who is acting professionally and doing her job properly.
As a nurse myself I can tell you that your attitude would be well noted in the medical report.

Not having a go at you Rosie, and I'm sure you are a 110% nurse (my wife is one as well), but nurses have to put up with all sorts of cr#p every day, and if someone objected to doing a duck waddle then I'd have thought it was par for the course that they would object and that the nurse concerned would let them rant and then note the results of the waddle and not the rant. Legally it was a medical exam not a psychological test.
But I could be wrong and if so I apologise.

BB, standing for hours on traffic control duty is not as easy as it seems. I couldn't do it for too long although I do have the ticket. In Adelaide it seems they don't take traffic control very seriously, so leaning on the sign or the ute most of the day might not hurt as much as actually standing for hours. Get back to pilotting. It's much easier. Less strain on the body, but a bit of strain on the brain from time to time. See you out there sometime.

i just want to clear the air a bit and say AT NO TIME DID I RANT AT THE NURSE DOING THE EXAM I did question the reasons one would be made to waddle like a duck particularly considering the type of "part time" job i am doing....and when the raised blood pressure was pointed out I did say, and my exact words were "well what do you expect",,,,this whole saga came about becasue I answerd a medical questionire truthfully, and in hind sight it would have been far easier to "lie by omission", if I had done that all this red tape for what was a simple process would never have had happend, so before anyone decides to jump down my throat about ranting at a nurse, make sure you have all the relevent information at hand first
