Googled Wongi - and got this info - sounds ok - who is interested - dates required -
"Exploring Wongi
Camp or picnic under the shady eucalypt trees. Cool off in a waterhole in summer. For your safety, never jump or dive into the waterholes. Supervise children closely as the water is deep. No fishing.
Two picnic areas, with tables, are provided beside the waterholes. Fires are not permitted. Follow Warrah Road until you reach the signposted entry to the day-use and camping area. Wongi camping area has sites to suit families, groups, caravans, tents and motorhomes. Picnic tables, toilets, cold showers and tank water are provided. Treat water before drinking. Take a fuel stove. Dogs are allowed on leashes.
Camping permits are required and fees ( http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/experiences/camping/camping_fees.html ) apply.
Book your campsite online ( http://parks.nprsr.qld.gov.au/permits ).
If you cannot book online, see camping bookings ( http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/experiences/camping/camping_bookings.html ) for other options.
Getting there
Wongi is 25km north-west of Maryborough. Head 12.5km towards Childers on the Bruce Highway then turn left at the signpost (the last reliable mobile phone reception is at this turnoff). Drive 10km into the picnic and camping areas along a gravel road."
And NO - I am not organising this - if you want to go - book yourself in - between 8th and 15th June 2013.
put your name down - so we know you are coming

We do need to entise as many GN to come to this meet up.
Meet ups are always a blast for everyone .
It would be good thinking to put on some thinking caps
so as to have some sugestions for a meet up in cool July
a fire place would be mandatory and perhaps so would a more northern campsite.
I recon camping at Wongi will sort out the real campers from the backyarders .
A little bit cool .... maybe
but the days will be barmy and be a good time to remember .
I am thinking I may not get there until Monday afternoon
I have something to attend to Monday morning at home.
cheers from Paul

Pity fires not allowed. I found a whole pile of railway sleeper pieces yesterday under a pile of rubble I'm getting ready for the tip. Lengths between a foot and 2 feet. Anybody want some let me know, I will put it aside for you.

Pity about fires at Wongi - wonder whether they would allow fires in a container - we can always put heat beads in the Cobb, cook a meal and the residue puts out good heat for quite some time. The only time there is a flame is when you burn off the heat beads.

Yep; its like buying a pig in a bag.
This booking in advance is a peice of crap, why book something that we have not seen, dont know if is is even worth going to. Many do not have phone service so cant be done on arrival if its ok.
We called into one of these last year just to have a look, glad we didnt book. No service at location, no fires, no gen, no sun so no solar, all sites under heavy tree canopy & too low to get a van into most sites, also too small for a van.
Seems like forests in Qld are like the NPWS.they dont want us there. In my book they are the countries biggest discriminators. Unless we walk we are not wanted.
Its tax payers money that has aquired these places.

10kms up a dirt road equals 20kms for the trip, I agree that it is like buying a pig in a poke without seeing what you are buying and I am against paying in the first place so it is unlikely that I will attend.
Got to be a more suitable location.

From what I understand fires are allowed if you have your own self contained fire pit. I know of people who have had a fire in this manner. I have a small self contained BBQ and have always been allowed to use it in parks that don't allow open fires. Also as far as paying, there was ( and I stress was)self registration at the site so no need to book sight unseen. Just remember to take the correct money, obviously no change given, it is, or was, an honour box system. I will try and ring QPWS (or their current incarnation) tomorrow to find out for sure and give an update.
As for the dirt road; the last time I went along there, admittedly nearly two years ago it was about as good as good as a dirt road gets. 80kph was not a problem.
Cheers,
Jack
PS
Personally I can't see that $5 ppn is extortionate for providing a cared for site with toilets, shower(cold) etc.

Have rung QPWS and apparently self registration is no longer available.
As for self contained fires they sent me some info. This is for Fraser Island but they said it is applicable to all parks that ban fires.
Not sure how to post link so have attached a pic of the reply. Hope it comes out ok.
We'd like to catch up with others at Dickanram Bridge but we can't get there until after 25/6 (that's of course provided we've found a car to buy by then.

This thread is starting to sound a bit negative guys. I called at Wongi last year and it was a hot dustbowl with no-one there, but I could see that with kind weather and a bit of green it would be a great spot. I hadn't pre booked and probably never will. What happens if the ranger turns up and you play dumb and offer to pay on the spot, anyone ever done that? I'd love to be there for a meetup, but still don't know yet if I can make it. And as for the 10km dirt road, I don't know about anyone else's motivation for travelling, but I'm out there to explore. The Old Grafton road in NSW was probably 100km of dreadful dirt road, but some of the most magic places I've been. As for Dickabram bridge, nice enough, but I can't imagine it with more than a half doz rigs unless you want to be very close! I guess we are such a diverse mob that meetups will never be in the right place for all of us -:)

Even though it the most inconvenient system ever invented I book, I always get court out if I don't Murphy's bloody law !! (and I always complain about it when I book if enough people complain often enough they MIGHT change it) and if booking by phone be mind full the person on the other end is only doing a job and probably thinks it a stupid idea as well but can't say it.
