We will be going to Cape York next year and want to start to find out where we can leave our caravan for about 4 weeks. Is there a caravan storage area in Cooktown area? What have others done?

Some caravan parks will store your caravan for a fee. You could start by making enquiries there.

While we were staying there, a caravan park in Cairns kept a row of caravans along the back fence, and eventually all their owners turned up together after a bus/boat trip to CY. I'm sure any caravan park would do it for a fee.
Great area & very popular during winter migration months.

Check the websites for the various caravan parks in Cooktown.
In Cairns First City Caravilla caravan park has secure storage and is regularly used by folks doing just what you're planning.

Ring around a few c/ parks as believe me the different price structure will asstound you .We left our van in Cairns when we did the Cape ,We were gone over a month so it was fairly expensive for the month.( make sure you chain your gas bottles together and on to your draw bar.) and anything else that could become someone elses .

we left ours at the First City Caravilla, Cairns, caught the Trinity Bay (working boat) up there, well worth it then only had to do the trip one way, did the telegraph track and ducked off to Weipa

Thats what we did ,would do it over over again in a click of a finger. nothing has come close to the grate time we had doing that trip. We went on to work out at Gove for 6 odd months and that was a different kind of life out there living.

I stayed at First City Caravilla for more than 2 years and they took good care of vans in secure storage while their owners went bush up the Cape. You may have to argue with the curlews to reclaim your portable real estate. There was a minimal fee It's a worthwhile investment in the safety of your property. Safe and happy travels.
