What keeps an active mind 'wholly active', in the playground?

I was wondering how the 'constant learning urge' works when in fulltime, GN-mode for other travellers.....
My Question: What do folk do, beyond the travel-focussed brain 'exercises' of this lifestyle (ie maps, meetings, mechanics and memories.... etc), to keep learning in many ways?
For instance, last lap of this continent, I (tried to) learn 'the night sky' in terms of obvious constellations, stars, planets etc; and the names of specific, native (endemic) flora.
Mind you, that's me.....my brain stops sometime after sleep ....on this point, I'm fairly certain I'm not alone though....hence the question.
(and I am in no way wishing to infer that folk whom can 'switch off' as they choose, are not learning)

Learning the names of stars, yes! they are soooo bright away from the cities, good onya Ellenajoel! I'm still working on the native (and introduced) flora... its a lifetime study of love.
Crosswords, Sudoku etc, are more excercises for the mind instead of learning, but a good pastime.

I'm all for learning no matter what your age. These forums are a good source of learning... I've learned quite a bit since joining a few months ago. Taking an interest in the names of stars and flora is a good thing too. It's all about curiosity and mental stimulation. I can't imagine life without it. For me, it's writing. I love to write. But you can't write unless you've got something to write about! So that keeps me learning. :)

Never too old to learn something new!!!! One member on here is writing beautiful poetry! Hope he keeps going and follows it through.

I undertook to do things that at first seemed out of reach but were a couple of those things that kept falling off the "bucket list" because I placed 'em in the "too hard" section ..
One was to get a professional assessmement defining my true ability in singing .. Like many, I just loved to sing and my good friends used to say "take it further" but I never did
because friends will always put the best construction on everything and I wasn't sure if I had the ability to do so (or I was being socially humoured) .. Having now achieved a postive outcome, I find that I have lost that urge
to take it further, and now enjoy what I have already achieved .. (with a lot of fine-tuning) ..
.. and then it was the "boys toys" ..
.. for years I wanted to fly R/C model Planes. The uncertainty of not knowing whether I would be able to handle the dexterity and mentality needed to keep a plane flying was finally achieved too (not without mishaps though) !
If you choose to do something for yourself, then any success is an achievement .. and happy is good!

Being unable to work, and stuck at home all the time, I have done heaps of courses, about 16 now, and passed everyone of them. Which is a great achievement for me seeing as I only did 2 months of year 9. I love to learn, plus I have my books, puzzles, games on my laptop and iPad, knitting and embroidery...the list goes on. I can't just sit and do nothing, my hands or mind need to be working while sitting idle.

Thank you Nomadic1 I just signed up for a course, I love learning. I even got my young disabled daughter to sign up as she loves doing courses too. So thank you.
