The "Gooney" or "Gooney Bird" was a World War Two nickname for the Douglas Dakota, aka DC3 in its civilian version.
Given some of the feats accomplished by those aircraft, especially during the war, the nickname was not altogether inappropriate for the reasons you cover in your post.

I think we have been miffed.. shes only does 3152 nm , not as far as first thought.. so will have to make up my mind to keep it or sell it.. till we find another plane..
any plane experts around with a knowledge of long distance mid sized jets, similar to this but can fly 5-6000 nm or more??
We have a new plane in Milo Aviation , she will be our world flight plane..
We initially was going to use "Venus de Milo" but we found this new one has a much
longer range, the 737 "venus de milo" only has a range of 3500 nm but this new Bird (as pilots call their planes)
has a range of 6500 nm!! so wil be a great asset for this world flight.. Will do a few long and short distance trips
to get the hang of her and see how she flies but so far so good!!
the "Gooney" is a long range Albatross bird , flies great distances .. so thats why we named her after this bird!
enjoy the pics We have a new plane in Milo Aviation , she will be our world flight plane..
