This Easter, as Easters before, I have camped on the banks of the Murray with a group of friends and family. The site that we chose was a small area accomodating 3 other groups.
The 2st group on going into town would leave their 3 young boys (5 yrs to about 8)alone for half a day. These same boys one day caught a turtle and proceeded to kill it with sticks whilst the parents watched and took photos.(Found this out later)
The 3rd camp: on arriving home late the young female driver ran over a possum which caused her to loose control of her vehicle and plough into a very large redgum. Write-off. Not insured near new Ford. This camp left behind 4 very large bags of rubbish and when confronted as they were leaving said they were locals and would return(After we told them we had their rego)
I decided to stay on after everyone had left and went for a long walk and was shocked as to how much rubbish was left behind. On talking to a local he assured me that the council did not clean it up and it eventually ends up in the Murray.
Where are the rangers, Police, council officers????? No one gives a ****!!!!!

I think this is why free camps are being closed down geojen. Councils (ratepayers) don't want to spend the money to clean up after people like that.

Yep, people like THAT. They're everywhere. The type who wheel their groceries home in shopping trolleys and leave the trolley parked in front of someone else's house. Sad to read of your experience, geojen. It really is a shame and I have no idea what can be done about it, other than citizens who volunteer their services like they do every year with Clean Up Australia.

Just do not understand that mindset............maybe a generational thing, but we were always to pick up after ourselves and still do, a real shame how people don't seem to care enough anymore, not my problem.

All this kind of behaviour only gives the local council or who ever is in control of the care of these places more reason to close them or put caretakers in to help over come this.I think it is getting closer every day that in certain areas through out Aus is going to be where one can only park.At the moment we have a fair amount of choice ,but in the end it will be limited to a few sites every few hundred ks.Or they will be just over night stops and that way we are all forced back into caravan parks. Some people also think because a place is free it becomes their real estate and stay there for weeks and even months.I think this has become a real issue and needs to be stamped out by all local councils.I opten wonder if these free camps were user pay would these same people stay for so long.

Anyone see the bloke who dumped a truck load of asbestos in a Sydney lane near a school? He was caught and shown on telly after his conviction. So maybe that's worth thinking about... shaming the perpetrators in public.

A program that is similar to neibourhood watch is alive and well in Tassie. Having been activley involved with this program over ten years I can say that the mindfull amongst us who do make the effort to report can and do make a difference
Driving along the highway between Hay and West Wyalong yesterday we were amazed at the rubbish
within 10 meters or so each side of the road . We stopped at one spot and I filled 2 shopping bags in less than 10 meters .
Mainly plastic soft drink bottles , but some cans , stubbies , pieces of plastic and one dry sherry bottle .
Â
So it's not just at campsite / picnic areas , it's all over the country .

It,s not only campers, I walk my dog through the bush which surrounds the town i live in, some mongrel that lives in the same town
dumped his household rubbish along one of the tracks. every thing from dirty nappies to last nights dinner wrapping. But the Moron!!
Left his name, address & even an unpaid speeding ticket in amongst them.
The local man in blue was very interested in the bundle of papers i gave him. haven,t heard the outcome yet, but it only happend last

With today's technology its not hard or time consuming to send an email or make a phone call to the appropriate authorities and report these low down grubs we all need to become active in this as we will be the loosers in the longer term and our beautiful country is defaced by these pathetic animals.

This reminds me of a neighbor who years ago found a heap of rubbish like you describe with papers which were addressed. He loaded the whole lot into the back of his car and delivered it to the people who'd dumped it. He spread it around their front garden, explaining to their neighbors what he was doing. Nobody was home at the time (or they pretended to be out) and no more was heard about it.

I did similar a couple of years ago when filthy neighbours left bags of rubbish and boxes of rotting fruit at my bin and of course it was not picked up. I found a prescription packet looked them up in phone book rang them at 7am, they were 2 houses down and the pig of a man made his wife come and clean it up, and he stood there and watched and called me a racist!!!!! I just said he was a pig in any language he liked.......

I agree with you there Jimbo, I heard a few weeks back on a radio program that some councils were spending $57M on fighting dumping of rubbish, surely it would be cheaper and more effective to have the council tips open for the full day, instead of just part days and stop charging ratepayers to use the tips, after all the tips are paid for by rates already, no excuse for dumping but councils are trying to collect twice for that, which is already paid for.

Of Course the councils are not completely free of any Guilt.....With the size of the rates people Pay their tip fees have gone through the roof....Hence the rubbish dumped
