Maggie Thatcher, The first UK female PM has passed away. Baroness Thatcher was reviled or loved by many. I can only go on my English Auntie Rose who hated her for cutting back pensions and sacking thousands of miners. And I don,t think she is very popular with the Argentinians, Either. She is/was a Tory icon, and I hope our version, the liberals, doesn,t take the same paths as her. Also Annett Furnechello, One of the original Mouseteers, passed away. I had a crush on her many, many years ago, in the black and white, Mickeymouse club tv days.Rest in peace. Bill

Love her or hate her she divided a nation and gave to the haves and took from the have nots.
Sold the water companies. Water rates were in with council rates. When they took out the water the council rates didn't drop and water rates went through the roof. Multi million pound salaries to the water boards.
Shut down unproductive mines and split families in two when the miners went on strike for jobs. Some communities are still destitute today.
Sold off the Electricity Companies with a consequent hike in cost to the consumer. Sold off the Gas Corporation with a hike in cost to the consumer.
Sold BT (British Telecom) reduction in service and a hike in cost to the consumer.
Sold off the Council Housing ( Housing Commission) now there are thousands of private companies renting accomodation.
Sold off the railways but kept the Infrastructure (Tracks and signals and stations) with all the upkeep costs for the taxpayer to fund.
All the privatisation gave big cat salaries to the new boards and cut jobs everywhere.
Sounds familiar here too doesn't it. Pollies selling OUR assets which we paid for with our taxes. Then upping prices and dropping services.
Yup I am a Cynic but with good reason.
I would prefer to keep the infrastructure in public hands and keep more jobs rather than sell the assets and put people on the dole. My view.

Point taken Cindy, a very fine line sometimes.
I don't mean this to sound insensitive, this is not meant to be, but must be a day for dying, Maggie, Annette and in addition my ex aged 73 died today at 4AM in Queensland. She had been ill for some time with kidney cancer. May they all RIP.

I'm really shocked to hear about Rolf Harris... I was a true fan of his. Has he been charged?

Rosey he has not been named publicly. The man who is on "Court Bail"bears very similar traits to Rolf. The English Court system put simply means that you are bailed to appear in Court although you may not have been charged with an offence, basically it means you have to appear in Court at a specfied date.

I'm more saddened by the death of Annette Funicello than the Iron Lady. And only 70 years old too.
The Micky Mouse Club is one of my first memories of TV.
She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1992, so has suffered for a long time.
May she Rest in Peace.

We have our own Iron Lady. I'm also sad to hear about Annette Funicello. I was a big fan of the Mouseketeers as a kid. As to Rolf Harris, well, let's wait and see. He painted the Queen's portrait not all that long ago.

Hi all, I have moved this thread from the 'General Forum' to the ‘I digress’ forum as I felt this would be a better spot for it.Also, just a quick reminder to please steer clear of political discussions.I understand that the death of Margaret Thatcher is a topic that many would like to talk about ... but I would appreciate if political comments could be avoided. We have found that politics often leads to bad feelings and we want to keep the forum a positive and inclusive place. Thanks for your understanding.

It is very sad. But i'd also like to give him the benefit of doubt and i'll wait until anything formal is announced to decide on a full opinion.

I've read a bit about the Iron Lady since her death. She may have gone but her legacy hasn't. Love her or loathe her, she made a difference, and you can't say that about the majority of leaders who basically disappear without a trace.

She went from a grocers daughter to a baroness, so I would say she was successful in life, but she reminded me of a lot of Tories/ liberals who think they are born to rule, and even started with the "we" thing when talking about herself, Like the Queen. Went a bit loopy towards the end. A strong pollie, no matter what her political persuasion. Denis, Her husband used to make me laugh .I wonder if she put her "iron" pants one leg at a time........... Memorable UK PM. Bill
