I have read other posts about dash cameras and have looked at several on ebay etc. Some reviews indicate that quality of pics is not good on some cameras. I have just looked at one from Jaycar ($199) and was hoping someone on here has one and can report on quality, please.
Thanks
Patto.

Hello - I posted earlier, but it didn't go through. We purchased one off ebay not long ago - $58 + postage. Good resolution etc, once you put the chip into the computer.
Son bought one as well for his show car - he hard wired his in, being a show car - has even printed pictures from it off his computer, came up well. Would recommend it.
Have had a couple of near misses, where it would have come in handy had they been accidents - heard that some insurance companies are talking of a rebate if you have one fitted, hope so, would be a great idea.

Patto, I fitted one a few mths back, very good. I did go for the more expensive type with the ability of GPS tracking, time & date etc.
On play back it uses google maps & GPS to show your location at any givin time, also speed recording.
I have a 32GIG card, It will cover around 600kls of driving at average road speeds.
Also have a look at one called GO PRO,( think thats correct,) saw them at harvey norman after I got mine, these are used by sport people like surf boardies, mountain bikers, dirt bikes etc, very robust, water & shock proof with a variety of mounting positions & compact.
Not only good for proof of problems but a good quality unit can give you video of trips into different areas if you wish to down load & keep.I have done this & watched it on tv.
I bought a crash cam from Dick Smith........Navman unit. Two versions one at $149 2 megapixel camera and the one I got a 5 megapixel at $199.Got a 32 gig micro SD card from Kogan at $29. Pictures are good and it has around 10 hrs before it over records.Software for the computer is easy to use and save pics or video.
Drawback no GPS facility otherwise very good.
I did see the Navig8r brand have one at $149 that has the GPS facility at 247 Deals.com.au
Looking at all the versions available it's not an easy choice.Hope you find one to suit.

Yep - that's how ours works Olley46 - start the car, it starts recording, stop the car, it stops. If we have an incident, or a near miss, we sometimes take the mini SD card out and put it on the computer for future reference.
Thanks wombat. It looks a bit complicated and 'overkill'.
I mainly want to capture the scenery as I drive and be able to play back on the computer.
PS. Does yours work done the wombat hole????? lol

my main reason for getting it was to use when we park in a supermarket carpark, I got sick and tired of inconsiderate people hitting my car and driving off, this unit is left on while we are shopping and after it gets hit it starts recording 10 secs before it was hit and IF the driver goes in front or behind our car there is a good chance we can get the rego number, this unit also records dates and times and co-ords of where it was hit etc, expensive unit but for what it does well worth it.
yes it will work down hy hole as long as the battery keeps getting charged
