What is it with Maltese terriers (pure or x) and grey nomad website members?

It seems as though (to my limited knowledge) quite a few dog-owning members here have a maltese terrier as a pet. Afterall, some even use same in their avatar pic!
This got me wondering......hence the subject title.
PLEASE NOTE: I am currently looking after two maltese cross dogs for a friend (one old, one not so old) and, previously, I shared my life with one for many years; she was almost 14 when she died; so....I am pretty certain they are 'special'.
I just wondered about their 'apparent', nomadic lifestyle (in-comfort, I'm sure ).

I reckon you would have to do s survey to prove your theory.
We have poodles and we meet quite a few other poodle travellers. It seems to me that lots of travellers choose little dogs like jack Russells or chihuahuas.
Lets see what the thread brings to light!

John Steinbeck travelled with a dog in his book Travels With Charley - Charley was a poodle. Steinbeck (of Grapes of Wrath fame) spent 3 months on the road in a motorhome during the '60s to write that book, pounding a portable typewriter to keep notes. No laptops back then. I think he died shortly after publishing the book. As to Maltese Terriers and such like, they're about as close to a cuddly toy as you can get, don't take up much space, and don't eat much.

We have decided that if ever we replace our beloved travelling companion, Brodie the border collie, that we will have a Shamozzel. That is the breed we want.

@Dunmowin'....I have a border collie (or he has me anyway)... he is about 13yo and 'works' as a heeler everydayon acreage, then he simply wants a chat/pat and a feed. Wonderful companion too IMHO. I'm sure you know that its a lucky human whom shares their time with a border collie....(now I'm going to look up what a Shamozzel is.... ????)

I know what you mean, we miss our travelling companion so much, all he ever wanted was to please us (have a swim) be nice to us (chase a ball) or walk on the beach with us (as long we threw frisbee). Yes, he was a loyal "working dog".
Have you found out what a Shamozzel is yet?

Well, since dogs don't normally publish books, my guess it was Steinbeck who died.

I googled Shamozzel, couldn't find anything to do with a dog. Its more a state of chaos-argument - noisy confusion or dispute. Maybe its spelt differently.

Yep....(I think so...) its about the Coefficient of Inbreeding, isnt it? If so, our collie X dog and my other (pomeranian/basenji?) dog and, well... all but one dog I've ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with probably fits the term...
(all our dogs were saved from the pound or accepted from ill-prepared humans, all have been bitsers/heinz variety, most have stayed a LONG time).....
but meanwhile the topic heading remains

I would say it was because those that have the SWF (small white fluffies!) just have not yet discovered Whippets! But then I could be accused of being somewhat biased!
Only joking my boys are mates with Tim, not a Maltese cross but a smaller fluffy type and a thoroughly good chap! He lived in my motorhome before it was mine and whenever he even hears it coming he gets excited and a bit confused, especially when his new motorhome and his old one (mine) are parked close together!

have to brush her every day evan in winter. my daughter has a couple of Maltese ****sue x ( forgive the spelling).
and they dont shed hair. that could be one reason for them being so popular.
Cheers Dave

Yes, spot on. Just a little fur ball with a bit of this, a bit of that, crossed with something else. a complete Shamozzel.

I have just adopted a Maltese from the pound to keep me company on my upcoming trip over the Nullabor. He is four years old and absolutely adorable. Whoever had him before must have trained him as he is very well behaved. Even goes to the toilet on command. Now I just have to work out what to do with "that coat". As a new Maltese owner, I would be very grateful for any tips re grooming etc.
