Has anyone sufferred these and is there help out there? I occaisionally have had in toe of foot but just goes away, last night started in my big toe then my leg from shin to inner thigh. The pain of trying to massage it out, stretch it was unbearable and took my breath away....after about 15 mins, seemed like and hour it settled down. Now my leg is still sore like muscle soreness.

You're right there Gerty. Also Barina, it sometimes helps to get up and stamp your foot [relevant leg of course] on the floor.
Cheers,
Sheba.

I take blackmores magnesium complex forte and it has been working for me for years. Magnesium relaxes the muscles throughout the body actually and you will find that your digestive system works better as well. I'm pretty sure it can be taken with other medications but always check with your pharmacist when purchasing if you are on prescription medication as well. I only take one a day and it works a treat. Good luck. Tess

Our resident Pharmacist on talk back radio recommends Magnesium for night cramps. He gets lots of positive feedback from listeners...

Used to be you would be told to put a cork in your bed - but maybe that is just an old wives tale????

I'm a Blackmores magnesium taker. But I take my tablet at night - I figure that it will help me sleep and also that's when I get the cramps. Usually take a calcium + Vit D + minerals tablet at night too. Take them with a cup of chamomile tea. I reckon with that regime I should be right for the night - sometimes I'm not, but mostly I am. Mum's old remedy was to put a woollen blanket in the bed under her legs. OK for winter, not so good for summer - maybe a woollen fleece would work just as well.

I really sympathise with you Barina - I am all too familiar with that syndrome. That pain in the thigh is AGONISING! (And very noisy - just ask my husband!)
Magnesium certainly helps; I take the Schuessler Tissue Salts (muscle relaxant), which are mag. phos., but forget to take them as prescribed (4 a day); I think I might try the Blackmore ones mentioned by Tess.
Another 'on the spot' remedy, which does seem to help me, is a glass of tonic water. It has an infinitesimal amount of quinine (used to be more but was cut back by regulation!). I remember my father getting severe cramps and having quinine tablets, but they're no longer prescribed.
Good luck!

Thanks all I have been drinking a glass of Tonic water at night this week and the magnesium Bio Organics 1 a day. On top of that I have a heel spur which I aggrevated the other day by a fair bit of walking. It has settled down now so I just remember to rest it a bit more during the day......

I saw crampeze the other day after I had bought the mag pills so will see how they go and might try them next. My breakfast now consists of 4 x prescrp pills, 1 x 1500 Glucosamine, 3x50mg CoQ10. dinner is 2 x presc, 1 x mag, and 3 times a day 2 x celery seed pills.

Know the feeling Judy. My breakfast consists of 1 Script Pill, 1 calcium, 1 Glucosamine, 1 Vit D, 1 Cranberry, 1 Magnesium and 2 Panadol Osteo. Again at tea time except for the 1 Script Pill. Then later 1 Cholestoral Tab and 1 aspirin. Then sometimes a 3rd lot of Panadol Osteo depending on the aches and pains. I'm starting to rattle but do feel a lot better.

Haven't tried this myself yet, but it is supposed to work.
"For instant relief from painful leg cramps, try this accupressure technique. Grab your upper lip between your thumb and index finger, and squeeze for about 30 seconds.
This is from a sports injury management specialist in Portland Oregon, who works with Olympic hopefuls.
It's a pain relief technique many athletes have found to be effective."
Cheers,
Sheba.

Many years ago our doctor told Alan to drink Schweppes Bitter Lemon (which had quinine in it). Not sure if that helped, but I read somewhere recently that if you get dehydrated you can get cramps. So drink plenty of water, especially if you have had a bit of alcohol or it is a particularly hot day. Brenda.

hi judy i can sympathize with you with the leg cramps my husband suffers badly wth the restless leg syndrome has been taking maganese tablets and a spray you srpay under your tongue, he still has his good and bad nights. with the heel spur I walked all around Bangkok with a heel spur in agony, thank goodness they have cheap foot massages, anyway the chiropodists threw out my shoes told me to go and buy good joggers and the exercise he gave me was if you stand with your toes just on the edge of a step and let your heels drop hanging on to something of course do this about ten times after you have been walking, this does help a bit

Thanks all, I have been taking magnesium pills, and drinking Tonic water occaisionally and the cramps have gone for the moment. Sheba I did try ther pressure point and happy to say it did work!!! who knows why these things work, but I am always willing to try.
For the Plantar Facitis my doctor has ordered orthotics for my shoes and they should be here next week. I do roll my foot over a hard tennis ball throughout the day. The pain has settled right down unless I touch it.

Very interested to read about the top lip accupressure technique, and will be sure to give it a go next time.
I use Staminade, which has magnesium as one of the ingredients, for almost instant relief when the cramps are real bad.

I have been getting these leg cramps at night for some time now. My sister inlaw told me to try a camphor block under the bottom sheet where your leg lays. No pain for about 10 days but then the pain came back. Woke up and started to massage, Wife asks what happened and I said the camphor was not working. She had not put a new block in when changing the bed. Put one in then and there and the pain was gone in 15 mins. Have not had an problem since.
