Looks liike a popular xmas gift. Our son gave my wife and I one each. Also a dvd with a huge amount of books on it, including all of Terry Pratchett books. Found an author of fantasy books quite a good read so added them (Yasmine Galenorn). The good bit is it also handles pdf files and jpeg so can use it to read info when needed in the shed.

Well surprise surprise, Santa gave me a Kindle e-reader for XMAS.
Thanks to all of you people who gave of their experiences in response to my earlier post seeking information.
I would have prefered a Paperwhite but they are not yet available in Aust. & I wasn't comfortable with getting one thru 'Gateway' or similar from the US of A.
We ended up with a Kindle 3G WiFi Keyboard. Trickie Dickie was out of stock in all stores but Big W had lots? Go figure. (My Daughter thought that I should have chosen a Kindle 'Touch' but I like the 3G feature).
Harvey Norman had a few Kobo Glows that tempted me but I went for Kindle.
The e reader is much easier to read than a normal book though I miss the feel of a paperback, but I'll have to get a protective case that includes a LED light for night use. Currently out of stock in most on line suppliers that I looked at.
I have been through the first 100 pages of Amazon free books (only 300 pages to go) and downloaded around 50 assorted books. A very easy one click process. Also have the file conversion program Calibre to convert non Amazon books if I really need to. There is a good cross section of free books on Amazon but very light on Aussie Authors.
Might turf out my small traveling library from the van for the upcoming trip to Sydney & rely on the Kindle (or maybe keep one paper back just in case). Downloaded a range of kids books for my Grandson who at age 7 is an avid reader. Might have trouble getting it back off him though. Oh well, might be a birthday present idea.

I tried to covert a book with calibre and then found out it was DRM and unable to be changed from its format so be careful and check before buying non Amazon books.

Hi All I have got a kindle as a xmas gift from my beautiful wife I am not an avid reader of books I think I have only read 7 books in my whole life but it seems that now I cant put the ereader down I have loaded 9 books on it so far from amazon free books. Can i ask if any of you wonderful people could explain what a calibreis and where I would have to get it from please. Chris
Calibre is program to manage your eBook collection. It acts as an e-library and also allows for format conversion, news feeds to eBook conversion, as well as e-book reader sync features and an integrated e-book viewer. It features library management, format conversion (all major eBook formats), syncing to e-book reader devices, fetching news from the Web and converting it into eBook form, viewing many different e-book formats, and giving you access to your book collection over the internet using just a browser.
I copied the description in italics from a web site where you can download a free copy of the program .. use the link above

E books come in various file formats but Kindle reads mainly .mobi format files.
If you want to buy books to read on your Kindle, from other than the Amazon site, then you may need to convert the book to .mobi format. That is one of the things that the Calibre program does.

I get Kobo on my Samsung tablet. They have heaps of free books s well as a good choice of books for sale. My tablet has an inbuilt light so I Don't need an external one. I'm pretty happy with it.

Hi Valnrob ..
I too have an E book reader program on my laptop. The problem that I found is reading it on the laptop outside in sunlight. That's the advantage of an e reader/ E ink. Less eye strain from non backlit screens too, so they say.
