Its important to avoid letting your blood sugar level get too low Jimbo. Keep a jar of jelly beans handy. In my experience a glass of non-diet coca cola will raise your blood sugar quicker than lollies though.

I have Type 2 diabetes and am on medication as well as insulin Jim. It is not just what you put in your mouth that affects your readings.
Stress, virus, climate (i.e extreme heat) can all affect you as well as lots of other small things.
Alcohol is supposed to lower your sugar levels and should be drunk with food.
Your readings don't sound too bad. Mine has been 23 at times.
Knowledge comes from trial and error.
Happy Investigations.

Well said Pricey, sounds like the voice of experience. They keep changing the rules, or at least the advice re diabetes, once upon a time sugar itself was the enemy, you could eat almost anything if it had no sugar. Then it was fats, sugar was allowed but everything had to be fat-free. Lately they seem to be focussing a lot on the Glycemic Index, along with exercise regimes. Alcohol raises the blood sugar briefly then it drops way down. Everybody is different, and we all have differing reactions to everything. I have hypo's which scared me at first, but after being tested several times over the years, I dont have diabetes. So I carry sweet muesli bars on bushwalks, keep non-diet coke in the fridge at home, and try to eat sensibly.

As a Type II diabetic with Insulin I have unfortunately let my lifestyle over the years take precedence over my health. Diabetes is the type of disease that you can ignore for quite awhile until one day you have eye, foot and blood pressure problems. The last year I have been taking it seriously with a daily diary and have reduced my long term blood sugar from 12 to 7.8. I have a lot of hypos but am in the fortunate position of getting around a 5 minute warning so I can pull over or sit down and take my jelly beans or tea with sugar. I had to take a step back after my Diabete specialist said to me that I shouldb't bother coming back as he wasn't wasting his time anymore.
I find that if you eat sensibly and drink the same you don't need to become pedantic about each meal. I also walk an hour a day and weight is slowly dropping off. Over the year have slowly gone from 128k to 116kg. My blood pressue is now under control with medication.
Last month I finally notified VicRoads that I'm diabetic and they asked for forms from my GP and Specialist.

It's not the end of the world Jimbo . If you handle it right of course .
I've had type 2 for a few years now . I follow a low GI diet ( glycemic index ) , and drink low carb beer .
Hahn Super Dry beer doesn't raise my sugar readings at all . I gave up eating potatoes completely , as
the old spud is one of the worst foods there is for diabetics . Very high GI . I lost 22kgs in the first 6 months ,
and have been able to keep it off .
My readings are always below 6 in the mornings , and haven't been over 6.7 for months .
Low GI and low fat foods have surely helped .

Terry ,not really happy with my endo.I also think that maybe I do not follow the diet as I should. Some times I go hypo when below 7.He tells me now that this is common in some Diabetics.I have my GP who is prepared to help me with my sugar problem.A short time ago he set a program of insulin for me which was starting to settle the readings down to a good level. Then wammo a problem with the kidneys, only working at 18 percent. The kidney doctor referred me back to the endo and the insulin was changed once again to the current dosages. He says this had to be done to try and get the kidneys back on track.Kidneys now at 37 percent .As i said in my earlier post ,totally confused.Next step, back to my GP to discuss the problems,as I have a alot of confidence in him.Im sorry to be so longwinded about this problem It good to talk to someone who undestands about this desease, even if is through the forum.Once again ,thankyou for your interest.....Alan

Thanks to all your ailments and so called cures that many have described above, I have decided to alter my signature. Perhaps it could be a sign to many of you.
Your so called cures - low carb beer, jelly beans, tablets, pills and so on do not fix your problems, that only mask them till some more come up to the surface.
Start eating fruits and vegetables, look at a alkaline diet rather than the acid forming foods that are mentioned above. Take a daily walk and watch the movie how to cure diabetes in 21 days.
Search the Internet for raw food pot lucks and open your mind to some natural food eating till your life and style gets under control.......

Been reading this thread with interest.
My b-i-l was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and stabilised on insulin about 18 months ago.
He was not your healthiest speciman- over weight, drank, smoked and watched TV. He got his health advice from the Bowling club!
Anyway, it was like an epiphany- he started to eat well, more fruit and veg, less grog, started to walk every day.
For the first time in his life he worked WITH his doctor, and his diabetes nurse became his best friend.
He then began to have hypos- so he adapted his insulin accordingly.
His weight dropped. His insulin requirements dropped. His sugars ar back to normal.
Currently no insulin, no tablets either, tests his blood every week or so.
Now, if you asked him, he would tell you its not easy.

Really pleased with myself. Had my levels checked by Dr Jimbo at Greens. 4.7 was my result. Lower than the last time checked at a real doctors. I really don't know why Jimbo is classed as diabetic as his levels weren't much different to mine. He doesn't take medication but has the kit to check it regularly. Poor Jimbo is now paranoid about it all, was doing it hourly out at the lake.

Needles are a piece of cake. You are unlikely to have a hypo (low bsl of around4) as you are not on insulin and your pancreas still makes insulin, just not enough. You should be getting used to needles as you should be checking your BSL (blood sugar level) a few times a day til you get to see a pattern for YOU! To the paranoid person taking his BSL every hour....stop it! :)

Spot on Barina, Basmati rice is the one to use. As well as my diabetic diet, I have also had to be on a low FODMAP diet. It is only just being developed and looks at how well your body can absorb the foods. Despite eliminating alot of the foods I thought were supposed to be good, my BSL has been really good for the last month. For example, no vita brits for breakfast, instead I have Rice Bubbles or Corn Flakes with psyllium, oat bran, slippery elm. Once the cooler weather starts I can get back into the porridge.
Very early in my diagnosis, a dietician told me to ' Do the best you can with what is available.' That has carried me through alot of tricky decision making.
Don't worry too much Milo because that will only make your sugar levels go up.
