I have been searching the web for a good date loaf, just like mum used to make, to no avail, so finally got my dear old 87yo mother to send me her recipe. Here it is for all to enjoy,
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon bi carb soda
1 teaspoon instant coffee
1 tablespoon butter
1 egg
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 1/2 cups plain flour
Method:
Pour boiling water over dates, soda and coffee, bring back to boil, then allow to cool.
Cream butter and sugar , add the egg, then dates and nuts.
Sift in flour and stir well.
Pour batter into greased loaf pan
Bake in slow oven for about an hour
Serve with butter and a nice cup of tea.

Yum! I love the "nice cup of tea" too! Does your elderly Mum still make her tea in a tea-pot?

I'm interested in the coffee - was it coffee essence in the 'old days' that they used to use? I just put instant coffee in a diabetic fruit cake and I thought it was too strong.

Yes, mum still uses her teapot.
I think the coffee is her add-in. The recipe would have been handed down from my Granny, they would not have had instant coffee in those days. I use instant in all my fruit cakes, unless I have some brewed coffee left over
