I noticed in the new Caps App that they mention that there is no longer camping allowed on the river bank at Gregory Downs. We stayed there 2 yrs ago and were hoping to do a return trip next year.
Has anyone recently been to this area on the way into Lawn Hill? When we were there last the Hotel owners were angry with people free camping there, but they were charging $30 p/n for a patch of dirt.

Hi, we camped there in July this year. Heaps of other caravaners there with us. The council have bins along the river bank. The old lady who runs the pub apparently complains from time to time. Rgds Gitsho

Thanks gitsho.......it is such a beautiful spot. Hopefully we will be able to next year. Apparently they have set up a free camp area across from the Hotel near the toilets. Not at all appalling.

We were there in August and it was open. There are signs saying no camping but pretty much ignored although they put bins down there.
It is on a river bed and I would imagine they would be pretty stringent about campers there in the summer months in case of flash floods. Then I think you can use the one just before you go over the bridge on the right (going toward Lawn hill) though there wasnt anyone using it while we were there. There were about 30 vans down beside the river when we were there. Lovely spot and the water is just beautiful.
we werent too impressed with the Hotels sites the grass was pretty long and it looked neglected. Much better down on the river.

Thanks for the feedback Pam. We hope to be there mid September, same time as last visit. There were only a few vans Then so plenty of room.
We swam down the river through the little rapids and kayaked up river which was just beautiful. The bird life was just amazing. Cheers Glenda

We were there again this year- just love the spot. Wander up to opposite the pub for hot showers & dump point.

We were there in July of this year and it was magic. There were heaps of others camping there, along with a few others we left our van there and drove in to Lawn Hill and Adeles Grove as the road was way too rough for our van. As you can see by the attached photo it is a beautiful spot. We wondered if the no camping sign was put up to negate the council from any responsibilites if a flash flood came through and caught any campers?? It is a beautiful place so enjoy
We were there two yrs ago camped down by the river clean toilet and showers up the top put the pub dont like it as he has the caravan park as well yes $30 a night, lots of folks including us left our vans there to, go Lawn Hill and Adeles Grove the road was shocking glad we left the van behind

We camped by the waters edge in September. There were signs saying 'No caravans past this point', but nobody seemed to be taking any notice. We were in a tent for this part of our trip. Camped in about the same spot as Cannylass. It was glorious . There wasn't much space left along the river by night fall. But we directed friends there late in October and they said that there was nobody camped there so they didn't stay.

The reason for the no caravans is that the town of Gregory as well as stations down stream pump water from the river for public consumption. Most of the vans there are dumping grey water onto the gravel within metres of the river as well as washing cars and clothing. There are also suggestions that some are dumping black tanks in the general area. Most people there don't like drinking others waste.
Having said that I also say don't spend a cent at the pub unless you have no other options the owner a viscous old biddy and her young b..... offsider regularly denigrate grey nomads behind their backs referring to them as terrorists in her more polite times. Having just finished an unpleasant stint there as an employee I know first hand what is said and what is thought of us nomads.
If you consider working there, shoot yourself first it will be a much more pleasing experience then working there.
