We have hust returned from a 6 week trip of the UK. We hired a motorhome which suited our travel needs. Had some great adventures through England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. We certainly had to keep our sense of humour as we manouvered through some very narrow lanes that they call roads! Brambles hedges or rock walls were often onlymcm away from the side morrors. We soon learnt that if someone was coming in the opposite direction the larger vehicle has right of way, so many a time cars would back up until to a siding to let us through.
Lots of birdwatching and photographing while there.
Found it interesting that the door is in the right side. Was it a right hand drive vehicle?

watch out where the gps takes you over there some of the roads are quite narrow, single lanes and tight turns, i speak from experience from our last trip over there! and nice rig!

Yes I used to panic when we had to meet another car on those tiny roads because sometimes under those 'brambles' (as they call blackberries) were dry stone walls! Discovered it was a good idea to have a hire car which already had a few bumps and scratches! Glad you had a great time. Welcome home. Enjoy the new grandchild and Christmas.

Yes Nomad it was right hand drive. The door was a bit of a problem as it was on the traffic side if you stopped on a siding close to a road.

Found that out very quickly milo. Used maps on my ipad instead, at least that gave you the number of the road and we could determin from that (most of the time) which road to take. B roads with 4 digit numbers to be avoided!
Enjoye nthe independence of the motorhome, being able to cook our own meals, same bed formthe duration and not pack up and unpack cases all the time. Took the motorhome on the ferry to Ireland as well.

Yes Wombat we had a few free camps. There was gas central heating and battery power in the motorhome. Joined the Caravan Club over there which also gave us access to many farm stays which were very cheap. The caravan parks over there are not fully serviced like ours. They have power but no water or sullage. The caravans do not have build in water tanks so the caravans carry 40litre barrels that they fill up and hand pump into the vans. They also have a 40 litre sullage tank. It seemed to be a daily thing for the caravan owners to fill their barrels and empty the sullage tanks. We had a 100 litre water tanks and 100 litre grey water tank which would last us 3-4 days with showers. The caravan parks also have very good dish washing facilities, and the amenities blocks are all centrally heated.

Thanks neilnruth. The Motorhome company said they were not too worried about scratches on the sides of the unit from branches etc. appently they have to repolace and detail the motorhomes every 4-6 months.

Sounds like what they do with the canal boats. I was having a pink fit every time my cousin rammed it into a bank (he coulodn't get idea of rudder steering even though he had been a sailor) and some of the canals were so narrow when another one passed you - there were scratches galore. But the manager was waiting when we got back and he just said, 'That's OK. We sell this season's off and buy new ones. We've already got some ready for next season.' Phew! My cousin just asked if we were going over again next year. Maybe M/H would be the way to go instead of car. In my dreams of course.

I freek out on the very narrow roads when something comes along and I ony drive a small car around. I hire the smallest car I can and get around that way when i go. I think the motor home experience would be a whole different trip.

Hi Jody, yes it Lindesfarne castle. It took a while to get use to the narrow roads....just have to keep a sence of humour and the drivers in the UK are so patient and polite.
