There is great budget camping site in SA at Mt Crawford State Forest. Easy to find. Go to Gawler, about 45 km from Adelaide, passing through Elisabeth. passing through Gawler, see to the turn right to Williamstown, and continue straight to "Y" junction. Take right leg of the "Y" junction to Mt Crawford. After passing lake on the right of the road and bridge, and about couple km up the hill, On the hill itself, see on the left site the SA State Forest office. I cant remember exact name. Out there you'll get all tourist info on all there is to see. There are. maps, and camping permits, all costing pennies. You can also get there a gold fossicking permits (you need one on private property, which this forest area is, apparently, and it is issed to vehicle number plates, beside name). Also there, you'll geet the camping permit. and map how to get to th. If in right time, there is also great mushroom picking place too, for those who like it, and know what to pick... Very popular over weekends, when weather's good. I'm not sure of length of stay, but I don't recall any restrictions about this, except one - in summer time there is no camping allowed at all anywhere in whole the area, nor fires at all allowed. Strict fire restrictions apply.
The place itself is very lovely, in the pine forest with some mixed forest, too. Plenty of fauna, including kangaroos. During the out of restriction times, after summer has ended, it is truly worth the bother to come and spent a few days. It costs only something like couple of bucks a night, or so. There is a cabin with fire place, water for washing (not drinkable, though) and toilets.

P.S. I got some additional news of this camping site. Take the note of many changes they made lately. unfortunately., the site is now no more suitable to stay overnight. now they scare with huge fines for staying there after the sun-down for overnight stay! Camping is allowed only over the day time, till the sun-dawn!
