Hi Mongrel, I have a GME TX3100 a neat compact reliable unit easy to install. I fitted a 4db aerial which is about in the middle range for aerials. I purchased it from ebay as a package with the aerial for around $300

Unless you are assured of getting properly approved Australian models I would steer clear of Evilbay. My suggestion is to use a local supplier that you can easily collar if things go wrong with your purchase.

Go Icom have an older 40 ch model plus a matching handheld and had no problems all controls in the hand piece and the main unit mounted under the passengers seat.

CB Radios are among the most reliable devices made. Seldom give trouble and many do millions of spine jarring miles. So, used on ebay is the cheap way to get a UHF CB. An important issue is the speaker size/quality. Some good CBs have tiny speakers but they have a socket for an easily purchased external speaker with 3.5mm plug. Any CB benefits from an external speaker placed about head height behind the driver. That way you can hear transmissions without turning up the volume so that you and your passenger's music/conversation is not drowned out. My preference is for manual squelch control - much easier to adjust so that only nearby transmissions are received, particularly useful when you approach towns where idiots operate.
