with a caravan you have the option of just using the vehicle to go do whatever.
I think it depends on how you travel as well.
a caravan also keeps your 'spot' when you need to get more supplies.
but a motor home is wonderful and i am thinking of up-grading to one in about 2 years.

Welcome tugga - it really does depend, as dawa says, on how you travel - do you go somewhere and sit for a long time, do you free camp, or caravan parks? are you a sightseer or not? Go to the caravan yards and have a look at some vans (second hand), and also go looking at some motorhomes. We have a Jayco Conquest 23ft motorhome, and find it is great for us - but others love their caravans - have had both, and prefer the motorhome myself. Ask lots of questions, go to "show us your rig" section on here and see what people have - a lot depends, as well, on how much you want to spend.

Welcome to the Forum tugga. I also have a motorhome, mostly because I can't back a 6x4 trailer, so a caravan is out of the question. I think a motorhome is easier to set up when you stop. (turn off the engine and go make a cuppa.) However, they do have disadvantages, i.e. you can't go anywhere without it. If you need groceries, you have to take the motorhome. Of course, some people do tow a car, which is the ideal set up. As Jules says, I guess it depends where and how you wish to travel. Good luck with your research.
Cheers!

Hi Tugga,
I have a little Suncamper Sherwood motorhome. It is very spacious inside, has shower and toilet and fits in a normal parking spot. I have been on the road for over two months now and I absolutely love it. I mainly free camp and have never found it a problem driving around sightseeing. Occasionally I go into a caravan park in an unpowered site and usually I don't bother connecting the water, preferring to use my tanks then filling them up again before I leave. The same with the grey water. I have the valve closed and before I leave I empty it out in one hit. That way I don't have to worry about unhooking everything everytime I want to go somewhere. If I have my chair and floor mat down I just leave them until I return. So far I haven't lost them. I also have solar panels and a satellite dish on the roof, so I am fully self suficient.

From our 5 years of living on the road, using both a 4x +van and motorhome, we have come up with some points in profile of both. See which one you prefer.
Profile A I want to see lots of sights close to made roads. I want to be able to pull up anywhere. I want to free camp some nights. I really dont worry too much about fuel costs. I want to be able to just get up and go.
Profile B I want to get off the road, maybe see wild country. I want to base myself in secure camp sites. I want to free camp some nights I want to plan my pace due to budget. Im in no real hurry.
Profile A is more suited to a self-contained motorhome and Profile B to 4X and Van. OR if you can afford it get a little 4X and pull it behind you motorhome, best of both worlds.

thanks for your suggestions i recently hired a motorhome for a 3 week stint in new zealand and loved it maybe i should hire one in oz for a couple of months as i am not keen on buying something that i need to sell after a short period there seems plenty of vans for sale and a lesser amount of motorhomes i do wonder how easy it is to sell either of these

Welcome and good luck with your decision and choice. If the vehicle or van is in good order and condition they usually sell fairly well if the price if reasonable. It's always down to personal choice, experience and ability. As with anything, practice makes better. No one is perfect. Not every road is flat and straight. There are hills to climb and corners to negotiate. Just wander the yards at your leisure, and don't be pressured into anything you don't want or need. Feel free to PM me to discuss this further.
