Was a bit wonky in back legs yesterday and developed a funny cough last night.
Took him somewhere new for a walk last week and only gave him a quick checkover as it is not tick season.
Gave him a good going over this morning and found TICKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now my poor boy is on a drip. Hope fully they can save him.
Apparently they have had 13 cases so far and it is not even tick season

Oh, thats sad and frightening. Must check my sons dog Cody out. I am still thinking of getting myself a new puppy. Think I will go for white or tan so the ticks will be easier to see. Cody is jet black.

Jack is a black C o c k e r Spaniel. I normally have hin shaved so I can check for ticks But, because it is winter I let his hair grow

Just got a call from the Vet. After shaving Jack they only found one more tick on him. He is responding well to treatment and is spending the night in hospital. One happy mummy is what I am.

Hope Jack recovers well, I always travel with Vit C or I have got Ledum 200 from the health food shop for emergency if not close to Vet, for something so tiny they sure do cause alot of problems.

I have not heard of Ledum 200.
What and how is it used ?
A friend told me maiden hair fern was good for ticks.
Apparently you boil it, let it cool then syringe as much of it as you can down the dogs neck

Got my boy home today. Bit sore and sorry for himself. Soft diet for 3 days and restricted activity for a week. Anyone who has a C o c k e r Spaniel knows how hard that is going to be

Hi Kaid, Ledum is a homeopathic remedy, I buy it at health food shop its a liquid in a small bottle with dropper, you give the dog/cat 3-4 drops every 15mins for 2 hrs then 1/2 hrly, but when my cat didn't get out of bed one morning for his brekky, and hes normally up before me wanting to be fed, checked and found a tick, he couldn't even stand up, vets not open so I gave him Ledum, within 1/2 he could stand on his own, and within the hour he was eating.. I couldn't believe it so carry it with me all the time now, have been told I can also use it for toad poisoning and snake bites.. hopefully I wont need to use it again, but rather have it especially when out bush and not close to vet. Went to Vet this morning for annual Lepto vaccination and vet said they had 7 dogs in on weekend with ticks, 2 didn't make it.. just checked mine and found the tinniest tick..

Wow, that is great. I will head out tomorrow and get some. Can't believe the ticks are around already. Have a preventic collar and Advantix but never thought I'd have to use it in the middle of winter. All this because I took him for a walk out of our area.

Hi HW I also carry Vitamin C, in tablet and powder form, also great for ticks, toads,snake bites and healing wounds, just good all round, can't overdose them with Vit C once they have had enough they will get diarrhoea, I have a great book Natural Pet Care by Pat Coleby which is great if you have a pet its worthwhile getting a copy.

Thats interesting as Vit C is the same for humans. If I feel a cold coming on I start taking large doses of Vit C, yep it works. lol

I'm so glad your dog is ok. I took mine to the vet today and there was a dog unconscious on the table while they were shaving looking for ticks. I hope he is ok too.
Mine had her teeth done and anal sacs removed, cost $500, not cheap but you've got to look after them.

Thanks R&R and Kaid, pet insurance, I guess I would rather just foot the bill. Worked out over the years I think I'm ahead in what insurance would have cost and particularly the limited coverage of some.
I had to go back to the vet today, Jess was in a lot of pain, so she has painkillers now. I think it was a big surgery for an old dog and I'm worried that I have put her through a surgery more major than I anticipated.

Jack is getting better everyday. Eating, drinking well
and alot happier. He has to go in a kennel next week
as we are heading to Melb for a Trade Show

It's great to hear Jack is improving so well. I've found with my animals in the past that once they've had a tick and come through ok, they seem to have a bit of resistance.
Thank you both for asking about Jess. I had to take her to the vet again today, she was in so much pain and the painkillers weren't helping. I have sedatives for her now. Gave her one and she is completely legless but showing no discomfort at the moment. She did earlier while trying to poo, had to clean up her bed and her as good as I could without hurting her.
I hope she starts to feel better soon. I'm not sure I want to sedate her again like this. Maybe a part of a tablet if needed.
I'm surprised that snakes are out this early, hopefully fairly slow. Thanks

I have pet health insurance. Took it out on the blue heeler pup we got in 2010 - AFTER she ate something in the garden that made her really sick. Of course, it was at night, and we had to take her to the after-hours hospital, where she stayed the night. That little exercise cost $1400.
After she died at 11 months old (just dropped dead) and we got the current Stumpy, I kept the insurance going. Costs about $400 a year, but it really doesn't take much to create a huge vet bill.
Just left my dog at the Vet.
