The question came up as to what a solo traveller does when they reach the end of their travelling life and need to settle somewhere? I am presuming that the solo or couple, have sold their property etc. and only have their mobile home plus maybe thier tow vehicle.
Some have suggested renting in a small town in the sticks ( cheap rent ).
What are others thoughts???

I believe that if you sell up and move to a out back area you need to be near good medical and other support Im lucky my wife and my self don't have to sell and can travel as we save the money we have closed up the house from time to time or had my sister or daughter look after it but sometimes I must admit I do think about selling up only the wife stops me.

I live in my van wherever I park up, currently an Adelaide c/park. I've been doing this since 1998. I don't need real estate or furniture yet. There will come a time when I can't get up and down the van steps and then I'll have to move into a state housing unit I suppose. I hope it's a while yet. Home is where you make it.

I asked housing when I handed back my keys, if I ever needed to come back how would I go getting back into a housing unit. She said No problem, come and put you name down, mind you, it will be a 10 year waiting time. I just hope this works where I am now.

.. One would hopefully think it might be sometime down the track .. life itself is full of variations .. adjustments .. and goals .. regardless of career or life paths.
.. for me, planning too far ahead would only be far too restrictive to a free spirit ..
If I'm unable to continue in my current mode, then I, or someone else will else will make a decision at that time ..
.. 'til then, I'm happy to live life to its fullest !

While I'm able I will keep on doing the caravan life and travel thing. I don't even want to think too far ahead to the day when I can't do this anymore. The only plan I have is to travel. There's a line in the new movie about elderly people in a hotel, can't remember the name, and the line is,"I don't plan ahead. I don't even buy green bananas." It's a great line and a really good attitude for the here and now. We all know death is inevitable. What happens between now and then is up to us if we have all our mental facalties and our health is reasonably good. The quality and quantity of what we do is up to us. I work within my own capabilities, and the bananas I buy are a little bit green.

I will never ever use State Housing as I am a person who lives on what I make and not what others are going to give me.....even if I get nothing
It is a shame that we have this mentality that the Government is going to look after us when we don't have any money for ourselves. We ALWAYS should be out there trying to help out own lives instead of looking for someone to look after it for us
I recently spent a few weeks in Sth Africa (and going back next month to help others) and they GET NOTHING and do not ask for ANYTHING....which is far different than here where people get a lot and ask for MORE.

Government services are payed for by the taxpayer.... me. So, not free, and if I need those services I will use them, as I paid for them.
I do however begrudge paying for them for people who have never worked (despite being well able to) and for people who take more than their fair share (i.e cheat).
I have worked long and hard, and planned for my future, and am (currently) financially secure, but part of my plan was to pay my tax so that I could depend on a good govt social system if I ever need to.
Like CG above The quality and quantity of what we do is up to us. I work within my own capabilities, and the bananas I buy are a little bit green.
Unlike Dunco above, I could never support a system which allows people to live and die in misery without makiny any attempt to level the playing field. The further we are from South Africa the better in my book.

When I no longer can turn the key and find a new direction, I hope to heavens it's because they've nailed the box and covered it with dirt, if not I'll give them living curry. The happiest people don't have everything, they just make the best of what they have, all I have is enough and I'm happy being a Nomad.

If you're fortunate enough to be in a position to totally fund your own retirement and purchase real estate good luck to you. Unfortunately a disjointed working life as a woman and single mother has made my income generating capabilities a bit limited. I did what I could with what I had. I set the trend in making the most of my pension and taught the electric mob and the phone mob how to plan ahead so the bill didn't hurt so much. In fact Centrelink got quite a shock when I showed them how I budgeted. I did work when I could. It took someone to die for me to have what I have now. The little bit I had got sucked up by the GFC. I'm still working when the work is there. I'm still writing articles for magazines in an attempt to generate another income. If I have to have state housing, pay the appropriate rent, live clean, neat and tidy, and grow my own veges if there's room, I will. Hopefully I'll be able to earn more, travel more and live more before I get to that point.

yes i agree totaly.
I cared for my disabled son as a single mother. No childcare in those days.
I have always made craft items and quilts for sale to make ends meet.
However since being on the road and free camping my pension [disability] is plenty.
I can go back to making hats etc for charity.
Not everyone can be a self funded retiree and those who are not still contribute as we spend our cash in the towns we pass.
We can also contribute here in our own country we don't have to go overseas.
I am finding that the less I have .......the less I want/need.
I grew up in the bush and so I am comfortable bush camping.
Some of my women friends shudder at what I am doing tho.
I however have no ambition to go back to the 4 walls I shall stay out here moving on every two weeks or so.

My plans is to stay travelling till I too become that smiling skeleton
I have little but I have enough to live a life I enjoy and I stop when and where I can and if I can help someone and enjoy their company then all the better.
I have no desire to die rich but I also hope to leave nothing for the Kids as mine will fight fo the last dollar to be split. (they cant even go for a meal together)
I have no desire for 4 walls and will go for a walk at night if I have to but I will remain on the road while I draw breath.

I don't really have a plan, other than to see as much of this country as I possibly can.
Through circumstances beyond my control, I am reliant on the Government to look after me...Disability Support Pension..and thank goodness we have that support in this great country. Some people need to walk a mile in others shoes before criticising.
