I was going to put this under techies corner, but decided it was better in general.
Had my caravan in for a service and the guy rings me to advise that there were serious cracks in the axles. Instead of telling him to go ahead with repairs, I decided to go have a look.
The axles have eight support points that were solid, the cracks are around the welds on a cosmetic plate to make the van look good.
When I pointed this out to him I could see the dollars profit drop from his eyes like tears. Cost of service went from $2000 to under $200.

Always pays to check when you are told that another problem has been found and the cost is going up, you can be sure that he knew as well as you that they were cosmetic plates thanks for the timely reminder to us all

I had a leak in the roof "fixed" for about $800. That night when it rained and I was 100km away, the roof still leaked. Some of these caravan repair places make tow truck drivers look angelic by comparison.
