Beautiful, beautiful places, but as has been said, in the busy season, those free camps are just as packed, if not more so than caravan parks.

Gday...
About 5km west of Mitchell - called Fisherman's Rest. Neil Turner weir is about 2km out of Mitchell - I checked it out but it is a bit like a caravan park (without power) lovely mown grass and neatly laid out.
It was fairly crowded at the weir but I had my spot at Fisherman's Rest all to myself. It is 48hours limit according to Camps 6, but the local police patrol daily and they said that as long as I did not start a garden I could stay longer.
I was there for 6 days - all by myself with lovely weather. Geez it woz hard ta take
Cheers

I totally agree with all the coments. Free camping is the only way to go.

I've heard of both of them John, but never needed to camp anywhere there. I'll have to check them out next time I'm out there.
Here is a link to - "The Top 10 things you should know before pulling into a Tourist Park".
The link is: - http://www.australiantraveller.com/great-articles/camping016-top-ten-caravanning-tips
I think you will find it close to the mark during holiday periods & school holidays.

Gday...

or being here....
Cheers
John
.. certainly does look like the Fletch ...
Now I know why I would rather free camp.
Me too....what she said.....lol
Gday...
Yep - Fletchers Creek ... 45km north of Charters Towers.
And I have heard it gets crowded in that "mexican time" (June-August).
Thankfully there were only about 6 of us there when I was there in September - in an area about the size of six football fields.
I camped there on two occasions - a week each time.
