correct, you have done the scan ok but you now need to grab the picture only from your scan folder.
open the folder where you have that picture, thenb right click on the picture and selct Open With/Windows Photo Gallery once that is open selcet Fix at the top menu.
at the right select Crop Picture, move the little squares at each corner with your mouse, and drag them to the corners of your pic, (not the white background just the pic)
Again on the right panel select Apply
Top menu now, select File/Make a copy.
This will open another option, from there you can change the filename save it to your desktop, then from your desktop drag it to the folder you originally made on your desktop.

BTW what computer system are you running? the instructions above are for Vista

make sure your scan is a high quality one
Right click your pic and select Open with Paint
Top Menu Square box select - select/rectangle selection
move cursor over pic and holddown left mouse button and drag top left to bottom right to select only the aeea you require = dotted line shows the area you want
Top menu click on Crop
Top menu left down arrow left click and select Save As JPG picture
save as change file name if you want, your pic will be on your desktop drag it to the folder you 1st made
