Picked up these nifty devices from China on Ebay for $12 delivered. Fitted one to the generator to keep track of howmany hours its run, it can be programed to flag a service symbol at a preset number of hours. It only needs 4turns of the sensor wire around the spark plug cable. It also gives engine RPM when the eng is running.

What is the name of them on ebay. I have been trying to get a tacho going on my hj , and only reads 1250 rpm, full revs. Yours seems simpler. Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill they are listed under engine hour meter. Have just been out & checked one on my 6Cyl Ford motor. In the instructions To set the tachometer, use 03 seting for 6cyl. the wire is just wraped 4 times around a plug wire (NOT the coil wire) iused no 6 plug lead as its closest to the fire wall. Works fine & matches the tacho built in to my vehicle for acuracy. Daryl

Thanks for the memory jogger I need one for my outboard motor to ensure I service it by the operational hours .
I assume it will work the same way on a 3 cyl 25 HP Suzzie

It may well give a false reading if used on a two stoke outboard as each plug sparks every engine revelution, as against a four stoke sparking every other revelution. of course not all outboards are two stroke these days. Landy

A single cylinder 4 stroke gives an ign pulse every revolution. Thats what its programed for on the generator in the pic as its a 4 stroke engine & its the same on my 2 stroke outboard. The unit if you read the instructions is programable for 3 types of ign pulses. On the 6cyl engine it was on the 3rd setting. If he only wants it for engine hours it wont matter what its set on as its only recording elapsed time.

Hi DeBe
Yes I really wasn't considering the single cylinder 4 stroke that throws out an unneeded spark by virtue of having the points cam ect on the end of the crankshaft, And must also confess to not reading the small print before posting.
