I was getting dressed yesterday morning when I felt a sting on top of my left hand, looked straight down to it and noticed 2 blood spots under the skin.
( I do bleed easily, only have to knock my hand and I get a blood spot as I have on right hand)
While watching the spots my skin started to rise, a piece about the size of a 20 cent piece rose between 1/4 and 1/2 inch. I watched it rise which only took minutes. Then it started going down again.
I thought I had been bitten by a spider, had a good hunt around, found nothing and took an antihistamine. When it got back to almost normal it was left feeling a bit spongy and a bruised blood look under the skin spread out. It now covers half the top of my hand. Goes right from the hand end of my fingers up to the 1st crease in the wrist and the width from just before my thumb to the middle of my hand.
It is still a bit spongy and although a couple of my fingers stung for a while that has all stopped. Was only a sort of tingle like little electric shocks.
I've had burst blood vessels on the inside of my fingers before, usually behind the knuckle joint and the sting was the same. And always leaves me with a bit of blue under the skin.
Do you think I will live, now thats a joke. Feel fine now. Could it have been a spider bite??

I do think you should at least get it checked out Marj. Even if you just go to the Chemist, to see if they think you should go to the Dr. with it. Do you have a 24hour Chemist there?
If not try the A&E at the Hospital.
Cheers,
Sheba.

Thought of that last night Sheba and again this morning. Still haven't got around to it. Hate being a hypochondriac, my daughter thinks I am. So I try and deal with stuff alone if I can. Will get chemist to check it out in the morning when I go into town. If I felt crook would have gone straight to A&E.

With something that visible, there's no way you're being a hypochondriac Marj. You make sure you get it seen to tomorrow.
Daughters do not know it all. You haven't imagined this, it is very visible.
And it's not small !!!
Look after youself woman. Don't worry if she thinks it's not serious. She is not a Doctor.
Take care,
Cheers,
Sheba.

Yes Marj - get it checked out tomorrow - that is a pretty huge size - even if it nothing, it will put your mind at rest - I take it you are on some sort of blood thinne I know you can get these things with that, and also as our skin gets thinner as we get older - I get those sort of blood blistery things if I bash myself sometimes - though I haven't lately - seems to come and go, I take no medication apart from Cholesterol stuff. Don't worry about what your daughter thinks - you need to be healthy, especially with the little one on the way. So off to the chemist or dr tomorrow - ok?

I take an aspirin every evening as advised by the hosp a few years ago as a precaution. Yes I bump myself and get those blood spots all the time and yes skin is a lot thinner than it used to be. I started on cholestoral tabs about a fortnihgt ago and the only other prescribed pill I take is Vit D. Although I do take Fish Oil and Glucosamine just to keep healthy.

Marj Aspirin thins the blood so even a small bump, which you may not even be aware of at the time can cause bleeding

I know what you mean about seeming to be a hypochondriac. When you've had a lot of medical problems, like you and I have had, some people get to thinking that way. I told my doctor about it after someone upsetting me, and she said there's 'no way you a hyochondriac! You have legitimate ailments.' She got cranky on my behalf!
I guarantee your daughter will change her attitude once she is a mother herself. I've seen it happen before.
As for your blood vessel problem...I've never heard of anything like that. As others have said, I'd be going to get it looked at.
And yes, I have thin skin too. Always bruising myself and/or getting those little red things. I can get one just by scratching my self too hard!

Daughter does seem to be changing her attitude already, isn't so grumpy with me as she used to be. It was a comment she made when looking at it. Like, Oh its just a spider bite, it will go away. Don't stress about the little things.
Anyway, haven't been to chemist yet, been too busy cut and polishing Myrtle today and she is looking good. Thanks to Ken Thomas. The bruising has nearly gone away but will ask someone when I get a chance. Yes Beth I get the little red things all the time when I knock my hands, have one on the other hand at the moment. Just a little bump and out they come. I realise it is made worse by taking the aspirin as clare says above, being a blood thinner. And if I walk into something will end up with a bruise on my leg every time.

Please get that checked out Marj. I have taken Cartia for about 12 years now, [ Aspirin for those who don't know,] am older than you, and I don't have this problem. If that was normal, surely I would have it by now.
I'm sure Myrtle doesn't want to lose her mother for a long while yet.
Cheers,
Sheba.

Sounds to me like you bumped a blood vessel under the skin while dressing, The aspirin would have worked against the immediate formation od a clot, and so more blood escaped the vessel than normally would have. If you had applied a firm bandage instead of watching it grow, then the bleeding would have been minimised sooner. No point going to the doctor - perhaps mention it next visit. Rosie.

Went to chemist today, he thinks it was a spider bite, still showing bruise but going yellow. Said because of the thinner blood it would have come out as a bruise. Also said to go back on aspirin as better to have that security than to have none at all. I had stopped taking them on the weekend. So I got the Cartia to be extra safe.

Really, hadn't thought of a connection there. Why do you say that? She has only put me on a low dose, thats what she said anyway. I just checked and its 5mg. Having another lot of blood tests next month to see if it needs increasing.
jules47 said

I think 5mg is about as low as you can go - I take 40mg - just been to have a blood test to check it all out - checking for everything - I am sure I am ok though. Just got to keep moving - that's why I bowl, play squash, and generally keep myself very active - not that any of it helps with losing weight!!!!! I take nothing else - just the cholesterol pill - glucosomene raises my blood sugar, and fish oil raises my cholesterol, even though it controls my exczma - so now I just pierce a capsule and rub it on when the exzema starts acting up. - Oh, and a glass of red wine every night (sometimes two).

I have tried walking - k after k - no difference. I bowl at times five or six times a week, (that is over 1000 steps, plus bending, stepping etc) play squash at a competitive level, am very active, drank gallons of water and ate only salad for weeks - no difference! I think I have a stagnant metabolism!!!!!!
What is the answer - who knows without spending a fortune on pre packaged foods!
Happywanderer said

And those prepackaged foods may not be so good for you either Jules. Who knows what additives are in them. I don't even buy TV dinners anymore, something can set me off so badly. Stick to the basics, good fruit and veges, a little meat with more chicken and fish. No soft drinks, no rubbish sweets. No processed foods etc etc. I say all this while sitting here eating my tea of bread and butter pudding with whip cream on top.

Sorry Lyn, I can't. I just threw it together, Buttered some white sliced bread, arranged it in a small casserole dish, sprinkled some cinnamon and a bit of brown sugar over. Couldn't find any sultanas. In a bowl I beat 3 eggs, added some milk and poured over the bread, popped in oven about 180 and left there till cooked. Don't ask me how long, I just kept checking it while watching the news and having a cuppa. But it was very nice. Whipped cream on top. Back to eating healthy tomorrow.

How's that hand? Is it still tender and spongy? Were there any puncture wounds in the centre of the puffy area? Was it hot to feel and touch at the time, or now? The first thing you should have done was apply an ice pack. That's always the first treatment. Then get advice. If you feel no ill effects now, even if the patch is still puffy and warm, I think you'll be ok. If you felt dizziness or nausea and any other ill effects, within 3-12 hours you should have acted much faster than you did. By the time you wrote the thread on GN you could have been very crook waiting for the responses. It's always ice first no matter what. If you think it's a bite do not wash the area of impact. Oh what am I doing? Teaching you fellas how to suck eggs. You should all already know this before you leave home. If not before, you will now, won't you. Rest, Ice, Elevation, and a constricting bandage if you're not sure.

Its ok CG. it happened a week ago. I took an antihistamine straight away. Never had any dizziness or nausea. The bruising has nearly gone but it is still a bit sore to touch. I'm sure I will be ok Dr CG. Next time I will remember to put ice on it. I wrote the thread 24 hours after it happened. I would have called an ambulance before waiting for all the very valuable advice from here if I thought I had needed to.
