Bingara .. on the Gwydir has been an excellent location for a long time, and I have been there on a few occasions myself.
Not sure where the new area is but I do know that Bingara Council is very pro when promoting the area ..
So many small places to stop and enjoy .. and so far, all free with unlimited time. There are a few CP's in the area, but all operate in good harmony .. the local council is most effective ..

I don't have a gps. I don't like them. They tell you railway crossing!! railway crossing!! when you passed over it a mile back.

There is also a free camp 8 km east of Bingara on the Copeton Dam road, it is right on the river, just turn of between the two bridges at Bingara, go past the caravan and hospital, drive on about 7 or 8 km and you will see the camp on the left, right on the river.
We have just spent a delightful 3 days there.
NOTE! it is for self contained vans as there is no power, water or toilets, but a delightful spot all the same.
