Am now on Permanent medication for the first time!

After a very busy hour at the doctors today I am now on permanent medication for the first time in my life.
Doc told me in January if I didn't get my cholestoral down she would put me on medication, so I did all the right things. Dropped 8 kilos, ate healthy which also dropped my blood pressure, so felt sure when I went today it would be all good. Would you believe my cholestoral had gone up even though it hadn't moved for nearly 5 years before that. So I am now on simvastatin.
What a day, have now got blisters over the backs of both hands from having 5 spots burnt off, boy did it sting. Also had a whooping cough vaccination in readiness for new grandson arriving in a few weeks.
So I now have sore arms, sore hands as well.
As my neighbour says, and he is on the exact same medication, "It takes away a lot of the worry taking that pill everynight" Hopefully will help avoid a heart attack in the future so I'm happy to take it if it means keeping me alive.

Marj, I can't comment on the cholesterol medication....but I know about the blisters and they do sting.
I went to the skin clinic this morning and had several spots burnt off and a couple cut out and sent off to pathology.
I had to go to my GP after that for my shoulder. I caught sight of myself in the surgery mirror and couldn't help but smile. I looked like someone had painted spots on me.
This getting older thing is NOT FOR SISSIES!!!!!

Have to agree pam, In the last 5 years had more done to me than the whole rest of my life. Those burning off of the spots sure do sting, thankfully only on my hands at this stage and have to be careful not to bump the blisters. Have a couple on my face I might get her to look at next visit. I'm using Paw Paw cream on them at the moment so hope I don't have to do anymroe than that.

You're not on your own there .. many on here would also be on permanent medication of some kind .. its a way of life ..

Just doing a bit of a count up. My dad died at 54 years, my mum died at 67 years and my husband died at 62 years. Isn't there anybody in my family who lived to 90. I think not.

it is interesting data ..
My Dad died at almost 80 (17 yrs ago) ..
Mum is soon to be 84 but terminally ill .. and time left is still undetermined. She still drives around town to go shopping etc ..
.. and my wife died at 50 yrs .. in Nov 2003
However, my wife's parents are still doing well in their mid 90's .. and he still drives about locally and still bowls regularly ..

My Nanna lived to 96 and never took a pill in her life and as for salt and blood pressure, well she had shares in the salt mines I think, heavily salted everything. Wish I took after her. My permanent medications now number 13 per day.

Hi Ma, dont stress too much about your cholesterol actually increasing despite all your changes with healthy food and exercise; it can change at times with the seasons (go figure). Of course the meds will give you a new lease of life and peace of mind knowing that you are looking after yourself, but the real relief will be obvious when you see the levels trending down and so the risk factors.(be realistic in your expectations as levels vary patient to patient) Come on Blue, keep those fish coming!

Ozi I think your reply should have been to Marj but never mind. My arm is good now thanks, yes we had to have the whooping cough injections too before we could see our newly arrived grandson. Small price to pay for their safety.
As for the cholesterol, been on meds for years. It's creeping up a bit now but nothing to worry about.
Poor Blue hasn't been fishing for nearly three weeks now........too much rain and wind............he's having withdrawal symptoms........

I have been duly admonished,punished and will not do it again if I remember to do so; but while I think of it......congratulations on the weight loss, 8kg is damn good since January and eating good healthy food combined with your new drug regime can only be beneficial to your living a better quality of life. Combined with Myrtle's heart transplant you both have a new lease on life and the zest to go live it.....

No apologies needed ozi. Isn't it amazing how some of our lives travel along the same road.......ie: Marj and me for one. I'm sure there are heaps more that have a lot of similarities as well.

Hi Guys, Yes I consider myself lucky to have fairly good health and no medication till now. I do have a couple of conditions which dictate what I eat but that does make it easier to lose weight. My family doesn't have a very high age limit, all aunties and uncles dying in their 50 - 60s, so nows the time to take heed and look after myself.

In my family the age at death is all over the place.
It goes from 18 months old to 104 years old and shows no particular pattern.
I guess we all just live until we die....so.... I try to make the most of every minute!!!

Don't worry too much about taking cholesterol meds Marj, I have been on them for about 17 years now - tried every thing possible to get it down naturally, but no go, so was on a mild dose for several years, then my knee started giving me trouble, and I thought I would give fish oil a go - my cholesterol went up, even tho I was on medication - incredible - now take a lot larger dosage, and never have a problem any more.
All of my b rothers are on cholesterol meds - our father had quintuple bypass surgery, and usually had a cholesteral reading in the 8's!!! My brothers all have some sort of heart problem - angina, heart attacks, murmers, etc., I have nothing else wrong with me (at the moment, touch wood), and keep myself pretty active, with bowls and squash, and walk when I can. All this doesn't help with the weight tho - that is a contunual battle.

Thats interesting you should say that about the fish oil as I have been taking fish oil for a while. I thought it was supposed to do some good. Even says on the bottle its good for healthy heart and cholestoral levels. Maybe I should stop taking it.

I'm not on any meds, although my doc got a bit ****y and suggested I should take some drugs but I can't remember what that was all about. My father died a whole century & 6 years after he was born. He lived from 1899 to 2005. Just before he died he went surfing on a foam boogie board thing, he had to be helped up the beach after that because he was exhausted. Died a week later.
I hope I don't live that long, because that means I will have to build another van & tug CRIKEY !

You are doing well Jack, not taking any medication. Now the only thing that worries me there is are you supposed to be taking some that the doc advised you about. Might be detrimental to your health to be ignoring his suggestion.

I've been on permanant medication for years, you feel like asking for a shopping trolley when you go to the chemist.
I had a heart attack in '97 (We were having a lot of extremely stressfull things happening), they put a stent in and I've had no problems since, Due to holding a semi license I have to have a medical every two years, had an exercise stress test two weeks ago, when I asked how I went they said "I was above average for a twenty year old..." as I'm in in my mid fifties I told them their machine was out of whack..

My doc told me I'm a heartless baaarstaaaR, so I don't have to worry about attacks. I'm glad u survived that one gubby, forum would be lost without you

Yes, Marj, you've done well to not have any meds til now.
My body started cracking up and falling apart at 43, and I'm now 57. Initially, it was caused by a stressful marriage, but once it got hold of me, it seems there was no going back.
I'm on 4 regular prescriptions, sometimes more.
My Mum died at 79, Dad at 83, so hopefully I've got a few more years ahead of me.

Hi guys - yes we should think ourselves lucky if we get to mid to late 50's before we have to take medication - I only take a cholesterol pill - but my late husband had his first heart attack at 50, second one at 55, and massive stroke at 60 - when I lost him. He was on a fair few pills, pretty strict diet, looked after himself pretty well, was lean and fit - didn't help though.
I believe in just keeping moving - I bowl two or three times a week, and play squash every Tuesday - sometimes playing two games - win some, lose some - beat a 16 year old tonight, which is good - don't like to be beaten - so bowling is my stretching, and the squash is the aerobic - in my 40's I did circuit training three times a week, and played racquetball twice a week, bushwalked twice a month (15 - 25 k) -
Who knows what is around the corner do we, just do what we can, while we can.
