Just had a phone call from a "chappy" with an Indian accent..telling me I had a problem with "windows" on my computer, and asking if he had my correct address. I thanked him nicely, and told him I was having trouble understanding his accent, so, could I speak to an Australian please. He told me, I was, as he was calling from Melbourne. I {nicely} told him, I was still having trouble understanding him, so, could I speak to someone with an Australian accent, as obviously, he was having trouble understanding me!!!!! He hung up on me!!!!!!! Fancy That!!!!!!!

Goodness Gracius Me! Are you sure it wasn,t a red indian? It was probable a scam, and I , for one, don,t like being answered by foriegn sounding oafs.But , with all the call centres moving offshore to save money, thats all we seem to get.Pretty pathetic, really. Any business who doesn,t employ australians has lost me anyway.

I hear heaps of these kind of calls all the time on the radio and the net..
best thing if they ring you , hang up..dont give them anything.

I've had them contact me a few times. I always tell them I'm just the secretary for the boss & that they will have to make an appointment to speak with him as he's a very busy man. Sometimes they try to continue to discuss matters with me and I always cut them short telling them, no point speaking to me, I can't make the decisions. . One persistant fellow insisted on making an appointment to speak with the boss & the earliest I could fit him in was the 23rd of June, 2018. I asked him to ring the day before his appointment to confirm, to which he replied that he surely will. LOL

Hi DellieMay As I only have a mobile I miss out on all those 'trying to sell you something' or 'scam' calls. So I miss out on all the fun. When I'm at my daughters & she gets one of those calls I have a ball. Just lead them on a bit like Jack Biggles. Cheers

The do not call register seems to work, well it seems to have worked for us.
We haven't had any calls of this nature for quite some time.
Having said that you watch tomorrow we will probably get two or more.......

I had an Asian woman call me a couple of weeks ago with the same story. I too, told her I couldn't understand her.

Me too Beth. Only call I've ever got. Maybe they don't class themselves as the annoying ones. I told the guy straight I knew it was a scam and he hung up on me.

I had one recently from an Indian chap claiming to be from Medibank Private seeking "just a few medical details". Over the phone. To a stranger? I don't think so, pal. Very short conversation. It MAY have been genuine, as he referred to a letter I vaguely recall receiving, but I found it intrusive and irritating. Having an unlisted home number, we get almost no calls at all. Cheers, Tony

If you have registered with DO NOT CALL and continue to receive marketing calls 30 days after registration, you can lodge a complaint with Australian Communications and Media Industry. There are serious consequences for telemarketers contravening this law. Kevin & Jan

I too am on the Do Not Call register and generally it works fine. There are some exemptions listed on the donotcall website, and I think some of these have given up too, possibly because of the negative reaction.
Unfortunately these scammers we're talking about here are crooks (to state the obvious) and couldn't give stuff about Do Not Call registers.
When people phone for private information, treat them the same way as you would a complete stranger approaching you in the street and asking for similar information. If it's a bank or other institution that's phoned, treat with suspicion and phone back or use some other way to "sus" out their bona fides such as asking questions only a genuine caller would be able to answer. Banks etc will usually identify themselves with this sort of info anyway.

Fixing the van last week, and a chap walks up the drive and stats that he was from a power company that we used to be with and wanted to know why we changed.. I said because they where selling power much cheeper than your lot..Ok he said we will give you power much cheeper now..When I said if he was going to give it free I wasnt interested . It took him by surprise and didnt belive me ..He kept on for 10 mins trying to under stand why I wouldnt go back to his power company. I said you should have looked after me when I was with you ,now its too late.. He was not happy , so you can get them, Indian looking and sounding chaps at your house as well. Its more fun face to face.. Same with the other lot that come from time to time, .......No Im never rude or do I swear.... makeing out Ive got a big dog and try to call him works wonders....

We share our home phone number with our business.
When I get one of these calls I always ask them if "they want a driving lesson?" When they try and continue on with their speel, I interupt and ask them again, "Do you want a driving lesson?" When the answer is no, I then ask them why have they rung a driving school if they don't want a driving lesson, they must have the wrong number, GOODBYE!
My wife just tells them she is the secretary and she has no idea when the manager will be back because he is currently on holidays.

Thats Excellent advice Jimricho, I refuse to discuss any such thing with anyone on the telephone about that sort of stuff. I always just ask for a reference number & tell them that I will head into the local branch about it.
It seems as if theres so many people out there willing to do the wrong thing by others, makes me cranky.

We had about 6 of those calls a few weeks ago, I was rude, I hung up on them, I shouted "Do not call this number again" and they still called the next day. So I blew a whistle... no more calls.
It really is a scam, has caught quite a lot of people apparently.

Did you know you can also register your Mobile number on the "do not call" registery site - I have and I don't get any "nuisance" calls on home or mobile.

Those who get the "News for Seniors" magazine from Centrelink can read about these scams on page 9 of the current issue. It makes mention of the "computer virus scam"

Here's another type of scam, I have had the same virus checker for 15-20 years on 3 computers, it stopped working last week so I phoned the 1300 number (CA Associates VET) only to be told two new ph numbers, when I phoned the next 1300 number I was told the problem needed a special tech support guy and I would have to pay $339 for two years service, I told them where to go and then emailed the original company, I was advised that 3 months ago they changed their tech support to iyogi and it was these guys that I phoned and was advise to pay, needless to say I now have a new virus program from Trend Micro
