If you are coming across from the New England to the coast then Gumma Reserve at Macksville is a great spot to camp.

Gday...
A good free-camp spot is at Bendemeer (165 in Camps 5) at the Bendemeer Showgrounds - beside the river.
Access is via 800mtr of excellent dirt road which runs parallel with the Highway. If coming from the north keep you eye open for the signs. Big wide open spaces and lovely trees. Very quiet and tranquil even though it is a popular site for travellers.
Cheers
