Jimbo I like your self don't like being ripped off, I myself am an Auto electrician while traveling around i charge $50.00 an hour and have been told by many that i am too cheap the going rate now it $90.00 hour ( because of costs of lease buildings paying wages ect ect) also my rate in caravan parks have been as much as a six pack & a freindly smile. i will admit some times i get confused expectialy when doing work at some car dealers and seeing some very young boys working on your cars and you paying top dollar for a service

Mechanic by trade myself, dont like to swing the tools any more. I quite happily pay my mechanic $90 an hour, he is a landrover specialist.. A lot of heavy duty fitters are charged out at over $140 hr which includes travel to a site. Have heard of specilist at over $130 hr on light vehicles. Last time I worked as a mechanic on a commerial basis I charged my time at $25 hr and that doesnt seem that many years ago. Often there is a 1 hr minumum charge for smaller jobs, also 15 minutes to do the job may have included another 45 minurtes getting parts from spare parts and clean up time cheers blaze

My local retired, part time grey nomad, Auto Electrician, came round two days ago and fitted halogen stop/indicator lights to the van probably did a good hours work, including a chat. Charged me $50. I was very happy with that. I am on the Redcliffe Penisula Qld, and happy to put anyone near here in contact with him. Also for information Repco's halogen lights were about half the price of Supercheaps though not quite as large

When you look up the award hourly rates for tradies and compare those with what's charged at the workshop door you have to wonder how they justify their hourly rate even taking into account overheads.

Does that include parts or just labour, If only labour I too would be angry. I would not have paid the bill and worked on a resolution at the time

Most call outs are $70 before the work starts. This is a standard call-out fee. The hourly rate after that is about $40 after that. This varies up and down depending on the scruples of the tradie. I had to call out the auto electrician to find a problem with my van lights. I was pleasantly surprised by the final bill for his 3 hours of investigation and repair. I can't remember what it was now, but it was a very pleasant surprise. I watched him work to help sort out the problem. This young bloke will go a long way. My poor Rosy is in the shop right now, since Monday. I had her serviced last week (not like a cow), and this week it's more intense front end repairs. The garage phoned me today to give me an update and get my permission to carry on. The bill so far, $660. There's probably another $200 to go on top, but to have a reliable, safe vehicle, it's got to be done. The nest egg is shrinking as you read this, but my truck will be safe. Thankfully they're not charging me storage Ha ha ha ha.
Howdrink, Chris where are you now? I have an auto electrical job to be done when this is done. If you're in the state you have a job if you want to do it. I could even come to your place.
