Hi everyone, I enjoy this forum immensely and it saddens me sometimes when I see members getting ticked off with each other when they post and someone takes offence when it really wasnt the intention of the postee. Now none of us are mind readers but could we perhaps use emoticons where applicable in order that what we post lessens misinterpretation and keeps this great forum the nice and friendly place that it is.
Any suggestions?
cheers,

Have to agree with you totally, there is too many occasions when something has been taken the wrong way. Do we have an emoticon for every circumstance
Also it would make it a whole lot easier if an appropriate heading was put in the subject line so we had an idea of what it was about before we opened the thread.

I have no idea how to use Emoticons. Have tried, and can't figure it out.
I have noticed though, that sometimes people do not read the relevant Post properly, and sometimes they haven't read the Original Post, which can give a whole different meaning to what they think they are replying to.
Only realised that, after I had done it myself once. I try not to make that mistake again.
Cheers, Sheba.

Sheba, for emoticons you have to be in Advanced editor. You can click on the few that are to the left
Or you can click on More emoticons. If you want to use any of those ones you have to write the word between : :
I only found out recently after someone explained it to me.

Yep - makes sense to me - it is so annoying when a thread on a good subject ends up with one or two people going off on a tangent - and criticising someone else's post. Maybe emoticons are one answer - or maybe, some people should read the full post before sounding off. I think you can only use emoticons if you "reply" - not in quick reply - is this right? The same thing is annoying in the "Pick this place" section - please can some people take the time to read other posted answers, to make sure they are replying to the right Picture. Gets very confusing.

Or how about "If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"
Yes thats right Jules, click on Quick Reply, then you will find Advanced editor so click on that. There you will find the emoticons.

Totally agree Sheba.
I read words, gave up comics in my early teens.
Highjacking the original post, often turning it into about them/theirs instead of starting a new thread, does not help either.

And now I've just been guilty of doing just that on the Solos' Page. Will try and rectify that asap. Sorry.

I think some people don't understand the usefulness of emoticons. They are sometimes essential in text conversations & posts in negating arguments as they can portray the emotion behind a persons post. We can't see someones body language or facial expression when reading the written word so this means we miss out on the tongue in cheek context that it may have been meant hence a fight starts.
Also they can be used as a bit of fun which I hope I never get too old for.
Cheers Jon

Fun! Fun! I'm not here for fun!
I'm here to be serious, and find out about all the things I thought I knew, but didn't?
As for mis-reading forums and staying on track, has anyone got the cricket scores from Pakistan yet?
Cheers

The literacy skills of everyone varies vastly and no one is better or worse than anyone else. It may just turn out that what the writer means may not be what the reader understands. No one is at fault generally, although sometimes I've noticed people take a comment far too personally and take offence, when it may not have been meant to be taken personally at all. (And please put the fence back where you found it). I would suggest reading your post before you hit the submit button, to make sure it says what you mean it to say. I would recommend you ensure your sense of humour is well and truly in gear whenever you log on to Grey Nomads. It's compulsory! No posts should address any person, just the topic or the issue. You will not be judged by you spelling or literacy skills. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm fluent at reading between the lines.

A very good suggestion to read again your post before hitting the submit button. I always proof read mine, the amount of times I have found a spelling mistake that needs correcting or a missing word that changes the whole context of the sentence. Certainly makes a lot of sense to reread, correct then post. A sense of humour is imperative also. Makes life a happier place.

Unfortunately English is the only language where one word can have different meanings, depending, but not always, on the spelling. That's when spelling or literary deficiencies can lead to misunderstanding. It's all about confusion, either meaning to confuse, or leading to confusion. I love the language for this reason. I have a lot of fun with our language. Puns can be fun.
