hi, can anyone tell me are there any states other than N S W where cast or throw netting is illegal. I have about five cast nets and i get all of my bait and sometimes a feed of both fish and prawns with them and i would hate to have to travell without them

G'day mate, you can add Victoria to your list....huge fine involved.
Probably best if you google the state fisheries where you may visit and check it out, I would even double check with them about "carrying them"!

Illegal in WA in majority of Inland Waters.
Legal in Ocean Waters excluding Sanctuarys / Marine Parks.
A Recreation Fishing Net License will be required.
Only one net may be carried and mesh sizes are regulated to max 25mm, max radius is 3m.

Sorry I can't help you with absoloutely genuine info.I do know that if you are using a cast net in the Tweed River even if you are on the Qld side of the river,the NSW people can and will book you.

thanks to all for the info, i will check with dept fisheries to get it right. I know that in N S W if you are caught with a wet net in your possession it will cost you about $2000 in fines, BUGGER can't afford that. Cheers ROB.

I know you can't have Large fishing nets over a certain size mesh, but have never heard of restrictions for Castnets, but then my experience has been 25 odd years ago. Things may have changed since then.

Qld And NT are about the only places that they allow cast nets, let alone they sell them here in NSW on the understanding they are not used here. Same as some forms of fish traps are not allowed in NSW as they trap Platypus and other protected wildlife. Pays to check the prevailing rules in each state on a regular basis as they change overnight with a teething period .
Boat and Fishing Licences are a similar situation no excuses will be accepted and on correspondence entered into

Just had a look at the Qld regs ....
Fresh water .... Cast nets prohibited
Tidal waters .... OK but max length rope to weights 3.7m ... mesh <28mm
Lots of other stuff on by-catch etc ..
I have seen local signs at boat ramps that definet just where you can use cast nets.

That is sooo right. In WA it is illegal to carry any net "on or adjacent to closed waters".
This makes it hard for travellers carrying fishing nets with them, to visit lakes and rivers on their way to open waters without breaking the law.
