G'day everyone, dont know if you have heard about todays protest by spud farmers in Victoria protesting a $26.50/tonne reduction by McCains ( Canadian company) for their produce. As mentioned by others on this forum it wont be long before this country has dire problems in feeding itself. We import over 30% of our food already and greedy multi nationals have made a mauling of the milk industry of late with now end in sight. Ah, McCains.......never again!

G'day Jimbo, locally Coles are advertising they are helping local banana growers.....yep, $10.99kg..........we buy them at the farmers market for $2.00 every Sunday.

Bananas were 11.99 a kilo here in Woolies the other day, Have stopped buying them now. Going for apples and pears at the moment as much cheaper.

OZ12 we have an Avenue of Honour that sell them for $ 2.99 Jones Fruits many such places on our Avenue...Apples $1 .50 Grannies and Nashies Heaps of stuff If people would only Look (Loca) to many are shopping still at Coles..They need too be taught a lesson.....We all know what the both of them want too do Long term...I would'nt give Fosters are wrap either..........

Jimbo - never missed buying apples in the Marsh whenever we went through there - nice, fresh, juicy and good price - hard to get a good apple here in qld - all in storage - unless we head down to Stanthorpe area -bit far for weekly shopping trip though.

Near where we live there is a beaut little fresh produce place on a farm,they sell out of a big shed.All their stock comes fresh from the garden,and at good prices too.We will not buy fresh produce from the big stores again.Tired of getting apples that are brown inside!!
There is no way I can afford to buy bananas at those prices and still wish we had an Aldi Store here in S.A. Helena.

The private fruit and veg shops in Salisbury seem to do bananas for a quarter the price of Coles and Woolies.
It's a con job, again! We don't even know if they're Qld bananas, or WA bananas.
There's too much dishonesty in these supermarkets. They think we're suckers.
My cousin sells his spuds to Snack for chips. They even come to the farm to pick them up.
My family used to grow twice as many acres, then negotiate the price with the merchants in Rundle Street Adelaide, then truck them down in bags.
Times have changed, but has it been for the better?

$11.95 Coles, Hollywood, Salisbury, and at the fruit and veg shop. I left them there and bought other fruit, but I miss my morning banana as a entree' to my breakfast. I'm having banana withdrawals, and I'll have to eat something else to provide my potassium for the day.

If the farmers were getting anywhere near that at the gate they would all have Swiss bank accounts, as per usual the middle man and all those after him get the big dollars The best tasting Bananas come from Nth NSW those big ones from Nth Qld are tasteless.

Where's the honesty. I'd prefer to buy fruit and veg from the farmer or at least outside the supermarket networks, but what are we buying? I've been to markets thinking I'm buying local produce, but it's got those little stickers on them, indicating they've been bought through the wholesale network. What do the growers/primary producers get out of the retail price we pay? There seems to be a big gap no one can account for. It would be great to get back to some basics but it's not going to happen while we're being conned by the big boys.

I gave up on the supermarkets a while ago with the exception of my local foodland who do support the local farmers.
I get all my meat from the butchers and fruit and veg which I might add is cheaper and fresher from the green grocer, now theres a name not oftern heard nowa days.....
I saw nectarines and pears at IGA the other day for nearly $8 kg when fruiterer they were $3.98.... and nanas were $17.98 at IGA and $10.98 next to the nectarines etc... Ya gotta wonder abou the profit margins of some theses stores.
As for apples just pick them ya self as you drive down the highways down here, between Mt Gambier and Kingstone there are apple trees all along the roadside and they are all full fo fruit.

We always try to buy meat from butchers and fruit/veg from greengrocers, but when travelling this is not always possible. Most. but not all, towns of a reasonable size have a butcher, but we could count on one hand the number of green grocers we've seen outside of the cities.
Fantastic fruit/veg markets in Carnarvon, Geraldton and Albany in WA.....
