Can anyone recommend something to hold the backs of souvenir badges onto the pins - for hat decoration? I was thinking of some sort of glue that would stick to metal?

Do you mean actual hat pins you put in hats????
If so what about those little white plastic things you put on the back of pierced earrings to stop them coming out.
Didn't think anyone used hat pins anymore!!

Hi Janetta,
Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy it,
How about those little round clip things that go on the back of badge pins, would they be any good?

Thanks for reply, I might be using the wrong term - I meant the souvenir badges (with pins) to decorate the hat. Maybe I should edit the post?

Thanks Vic, I was thinking of some sort of glue to make the backs stay on the pins- you know the souvenir badges for hats.

You mean the souvenir pins that are a bit like a brooch on the back?? They clip into a hook once attached.

If you are meaning you want to glue the brooch bit on to the back of the souvenir bit you would need a metal glue, I would think.

Janetta,
An ordinary craft glue (not PVA) should do the trick. I presume you want to stop the back clip from coming off. If you ask in a craft shop there is a whole range of different glues for different little jobs like this.

I use a dab of Tarzan Grip behind the pin. This has held in place well.
I use to put a stitch of thread around as well but found little glue worked well.
Have only lost 1 pin in 3 years. Mine are all collected during military service and either military or police orientated did use them as tie pin when serving and then needed to find another place as not worn tie since leaving military 3 years ago.
I bent over the pins down inside the hat with a pair of "pointy" pliers. Havent moved, no glue.

Some have a clip, but others have a staight pin which goes through the fabric and a disc shaped clasp which you push on to secure in place. Mine tend to come loose and the badge is at risk of being lost.

Hi Janetta,
Worked in two different Costume Jewellery Factories in Sydney in the 60's, [Barcs' and Arkansas. The latter used to make the Miss Australia Crowns at the time.] and we always used Araldite for glueing Gem-Stones to metal.
You have to heat the object [we used to put brooches etc. on empty Matchboxes.] in an oven. Can't remember for how long though.
Don't see why the same procedure wouldn't work for metal to metal. You could always solder them too.
The only way to remove the Stones from anything then, was to Boil the piece for quite a while.

Thanks everyone, they are all great tips which I can try when we get on the road at the end of the month, when we start our first 6 month trip.

I don't think Janetta changed the thread as such Marj, it was just in the beginning I wasn't too sure what she was aiming at, but now I have worked it all out.

Really? Janetta asked if anyone knew what you could put on the end of a hatpin to stop it from falling out. I thought she meant the hat pins that look like a sewing pin but a lot larger with decoration on one end and a point on the other that ladies use to hold their hat on.
Goes to show how so many people can read something so different, its all a lot of fun isn't it?

You had me doubting myself there Marj. Went back and had a read of the original thread. It's all pretty clear now, well to me at least........

Ma, the original thread has totally gone. It was edited to a new thread completely. Not one of those words were in the original thread.

I knew it was - what Al88 has or Or she's about 90 in th shade Mine is like Al88 - only I don't have to use anything , mine are mostly quality pins , Navy pins I have had em on same hat for 12yrs . I wear a leather hat , so when I wear it , I make sure all pins are tight , only takes me a minute . Most of mine are irreplaceable , don't want to loose em . Richo

Most of the pins have a slide on thing like stud earings. Some are metal and have a sprint-type mechanism which holds it on the pin.
Others come with a rubber or plastic slide which holds itself on.
I have about 100 pins, but I've put them on a scarf which I've hung on a curtain rail across the van. They'd been too heavy for a hat.
The couple of pins that I have on my straw hat seem to want to stay there with the clips that come with the pin.

Good Idea too Cruising Granny.... I might just put a few on my akubra and add some to a curtain or make a flag of sorts. Lots of great idea from everyone. Can't wait to hit the road in a couple of weeks.

Mine are on a ribbon which I drape across the frill at the top of the window putting every 4th or 5th badge through the frill. Will have to start a new ribbon next trip.

You could get a sheet or something more decorative or a map of Oz and stick the pins on the spot where it came from.
The van walls wouldn't accommodate that, but a house wall would.
I used to collect cloth badges, but the jacket is full and under the bed.
Stickers take up a lot of space, and if anyone has seen my "Rosy", there isn't much window space left, and then they flake off after a while.
So it's the hat pins for me. Some are even creative and decorative, other than the plain round ones.

The cloth badges idea would make a good quilt.....but I still love the daggy hats with badges.... thanks for all the suggestions.
