We are back from 15 wonderful weeks in Tassie. There has been earlier postings on the cost of getting to Tasmania and how that has turned some people off going there but really, if visiting for any length of time you will recoup the cost of the ferry. Tasmania really is a RV friendly state, so many beautiful free or cheap camps, wonderful people, stunning scenery,great produce, I could keep going but I think I'm getting across that is worth visiting. We have been pretty slack with keeping our blog upto date but too many happy hours. Arrive home tommorrow for a month catching up with family and freinds so will endeveour to catch up then.

Good to hear from you Gary and Kerry. The problem with coming back from Tassie is that you immediately start to plan your next trip over the Tasman!

over the Tasman???? That's New Zealand over there, GD. Last time I looked Tasmania was south of the Aussie mainland across Bass Straight.

That makes my 2weeks look like a hit & run .
We are going over to Tassie , early Jan for National Kayaking C.ships .
I reckon the fares ok , even if it is peak time , Dad , mum , son & car .
We don't know where th c/ships are yet -except for Tassie . I would like a week before or a
week after , the kayaking runs for a week .Richo

the bride and i will be hopeflly heading to tassie for 3 weeks in september and taking the newly aquired camper trailer and oztent ( we like camping ) we only have 3 weeks this year though, used up the last of my long service leaave last year up at cape yorke (derrr) should have saved some but ****e happens,, now that we have the camper and are more or less self conatined what we spend on the fare accross we hope to save by "free camping" some of the tme...
Off to the Adelaide Caravan and campng show this weekend so hopefully there will be info that i can grab on tassie and WA which is on the planning board for next year....

Hi You will have no problems free camping in tassie, lots of places and most by water of some sort. cheers blaze

Just a small tip for all you "foreign boat people" coming over here, make sure that your passport is up to date and you have a visa to cross the "Oatlands line."

Meals on the ferry are expensive $30 for a plate of food and a cold drink so good idea to take your own. We had a cabin going over (night trip) and a reserved seat (day trip) coming back, don't know if i would be bothered with a reserved seat again as we spent 95% of the trip wandering around. National Parks are expensive, $24 entry per day, get a 2 month pass, we bought a annual pass for $86 concession. Camping fees are another $13per day. School holidays is a busy time and if on the east coast finding somewhere to camp can be a challange. Locals start moving their vans.mh's etc onsite weeks before and leave them there. We got to bay of fires (Swimcart beach) a week before xmas and werer lucky to get a spot. Leaving day after boxing day our spot was filled before we got on the track proper. Water is plentiful but untreated in most places with the exception of the Tasman peninsula, no water available so make sure you fill up before leaving Sorell. Caravan Park at Waratah $16pn unpowered, $21 pn powered has free laundry facilities including a dryer. Buy frit and veg at farmers markets much cheaper and better quality than supermarkets. Nearly all places where showers available (including CP's) are coin operated, cost varies $1 for 3 minutes upwards.
