I am thinking about getting an i phone . Does anyone know anything about them?

Darling HTC Desire is well worthy of a look. Android heaps of free great software for travellers, like all the Google apps and a real GPS not a fake GPS that works off tower triangulation. HTC Desire more rugged than iPhone and better remote reception.

This is a post I made the other day regarding my IPhone, the question was regarding why i have an IP4 and a dongle for my net useage when away... this may give you some insight on a couple of issues I have faced.

I also bought my IP4 outright and put it on my existing telstra plan by just swapping the sim card at a telstra store.
 
I have had an IPhone since they first came onto the market here in AU and have never looked back, the simple fact that everything is in one device is awesome, no more PDA and phone etc.. which when I had my own business I carried everywhere.

I love the fact that when I get into the car it connects to the stereo and all calls and music are through it, no more changing CD's, no more searching for radio stations every few hundred K's and I get to listen to what I want to hear, and the camera is quite good at 5 megapixel and it geocaches the images, in otherwords it logs the location of the picture on a google map so I never have to try to remember where I took that amazing picture.

Also a big plus is I if find somewhere I want to know more about I can use the phone browser (safari) to look it up and if they have a phone number the phone recognises it on the web page and to call it all I need to do is tap the number on the page and the phone calls it...no more having to rememer numbers while trying to dial, also the phone supports multi-tasking, so if i am in a call I can use the integral notepad to make notes while talking, great for those centrelink and toolstra calls with receipt numbers..

As for having both dongle and IP4 - The net useage on the IPhone is quite expensive, I get 1.25gB with the phone which I can use by just checking weather and doing banking and chasing up things I see along the road, also while I have a top of the line Navman GPS the live mapping is also quite usefull for those times when the navman just doesn't make that right decision...but it's data hungry. Thelive mpping uses google maps so the satelite view is great for picking out tracks etc...something GPS just hasn't gt hold of yet. Also when the IP4 updates itself through ITunes it takes quite a large amount of download, the files are quite large because they generally reinstall a new Operating Sysytem with each update which is done via ITunes on the laptop.

I have  Bigpuddle dongle which gives me 7gB  (and is shaped afterwards) for about $60 a month and this is easier to use when I get on here while at a van park or somewhere with 240AC. The laptop is much easier on th eyes and the net is so much cheaper in the long run, also apple is not the best at compatability with chats and forums, they are getting better but the phone doesnt support Flash which limits it severely.

As for tethering the phone to the laptop it is quite cost prohibitive, as well know Toolstra, Ooptus and the rest do not make their billion dollar plus profits each quarter by giving us a free lunch... 

Just as a side I do have a Toolstra blue tick tradesman phone for the rougher areas as its dust and water and supposedly shock resistant but I have NEVER needed to use it.

In short....

I love my IPhone , it is my camera, voice recorder, diary, shopping list, calculator, bank teller, net surfer, and a phone..... it is the best $900 I have spent, I bought the phone outright at ths Apple Store and just got a $49 plan with Toolstra.

I would have to agree with Grunpster that the iPhone is great. Brilliant on the go camera and I can't say that I have had much of a problem with reception so far but that may change later in the year when we go over the north west. Anyway if reception is average I will add an outdoor antennae on the van but I can live without the phone for a few days at a time...ask my lovely wife PS we do also live in a poor reception area and it's fine.

Thats what i like about GN site. ask anything and you get genuine replies My current plan is due to end and on a telstra $49 plan for an extra $6 pm you can get the i phone ($55 pm for $400 worth of calls and text and 1Gig internet I think) my 2 year old nokia looks very outdated.

Forgot to add that I have heard that you can only send pics to other i phones . Is that correct?

Hi Pam, hope all well with you. Check out that plan again as I have a Telstra plan, not I Phone, for 49.95 a month which gives me 400.00 calls and text and the 1 Gg internet. So for a bit more being 55.00 I would be expecting a bit more on the free side.

I send pics to other phones without any issues at all, the video call (face time) is IPhone specific.

Also don't buy from a Telstra Shop as these are mostly franchises and will give you little or no bonuses, do it over the phone & drive them to give you their best deal or threaten to go elsewhere, they will give you more over the phone than instore. Pretend you are buying a new van or car...haggle haggle haggle and then haggle a bit more, you will be suprised what you can get.

I am on a $49 cap and get 1.25Gb of data and upto $350/mth in calls etc... so make them work for you don't just give them your money.

I agree,my iphone and I have been inseparable since they first came out.Bought mine from Harvey Normans,best $900 I have spent......to date!!

i got my iphone. Still getting used to it. very sensitive if but it is great

i had an iphone 3gs , but it died and i was out of contract so just got a basic nokia untill the new iphone 5 comes out in a couple months, I have an ipod touch for my music, but i miss my iphone... oh well if you can hold out for a couple months, wait n see what the new iphone is like...
