Hi I have just switch to bigpond mobile broadband, call Bigpond Ultimate I had ADSL From Internode which I was happy with , but the problem was when we are on the road we were paying for the ADSL which we went using and paying for prepaid wireless on the road.WE were paying $39.95 pm. for 5GB for ADSL internode now we are paying $39.95 pm. for 7GB. our wireless wich after you reach your 7GB you pay no more but your speed slow , the wireless is 8 time faster than our ADSL was and now have a product that we can use at home and on the road very happy  , must  have a telstra home phone or telstra mobile to get it for $39.95 pm. if you dont have a home phone it is $59.95 pm.

Just have a look at the news about the other telcos ..Telstra is our telco all the others are just blowins..with half the coverage.. $10= 1gig plenty for emails and little brozzz..very happy.. came across bass strait on boxing day on the tassie express, never lost coverage on the phone all the way across...try that with one of the ??????? others..Bobnbev

I've got exactly the same as you brickies for exactly the same reason. The only difference is I only got 3 Gigs for the same price as you. It was about a year ago and they were only giving 3 gigs then. No point having home connection then having to have another when travelling and yes, so much faster.

I too have telstra for traveling but internode at home If telstra offered the same plan as I have with internode, Then id drop my home net in a flash..

milo Telsta do offer some good deals these days. But why have the two. Like me and the others use the one for home and travelling. Cut the costs. If you've already got one for travelling just use it at home too and get rid of the other.

I'm also using a Bigpond Wireless modem (Dongle).
Use it with my office PC and when travelling or whating to use the internet in another room, just plug the same dongle in to the Lap Top and I'm on line.
Anywhere I can get a phone signal I can connect to bigpond wireless.
As I don't do much surfing or download videos or music I went for the 1 Gig plan at $29.95/month, less discounts which brings it down to only $19.95/month.
Only ever gone over the 1 Gig once and it just slowed to a little bit slower than my old ADSL plan.

ozjohn, I found I needed the 3 Gg when playing around with photos, uploading, downloading takes a bit more so upgraded from the original 1 or 2 that I had. If I don't do photos I stay well within the 2 Ggs. But either way it only slows down a bit anyway.

I left Bigpond for Exetel a few years back when the Bigpond deal was lousy value. I have home phone and mobile with Telstra so I might go and talk to them in the next day or so. This year (2010) I spent 4 months on the road so this may be a better proposition.

Just checked my account again. I pay 29.95 for 3 Gigs. There is a discount of 20.00 as usually 49.95 but get the discount as 3 in 1 phone bill. Not a bad deal.

IT's the speed that make the difference has well our ADSL was about 1.5 the bigpond ultimate dongle is running between 12 and 15 , we have a laptop and a desktop running wireless using a router with a USB port which we plug the dongle into it result we have two computer running off the one dongle and kids able to use it for their Iphone and Ipads when they visit, telstra have a deal if you sign for 24 month you get the discount if you have another telstra product and also get the $299 dongle for free , can't believe the speed of the ultimate wireless over ADSL

hi guys also with telstra we havnt had a land line for 3 years just a mobile 3Gl and wirless PC cant find any faults with either. no trouble getting coverage where we go.

That's the way I'm thinking of going,  just need to think through the logistics over the next little while.  (change of address, phone number etc.)

One factor to consider if ditching the landline is the impact on those people who call you.  Depending on their carrier & call plan it may mean that they are charged at the call to mobile rate, which could be rather expensive.

eg.   My Telstra HomeLine Advanced

... calls to Telstra mobiles 16.5 cents/30 secs (plus 39c call connection), capped at $2 for up to 20min

...calls non Telstra mobiles 18.5 cents per 30 secs (plus 39c call connection), capped at $2 for up to 20min.


Another issue is the effect on the 'Bundling' discount  if you only have Mob & Internet bundled then the discount MAY be only $10.

Choice is a wonderful thing .. but it brings its own set of headaches.

 

Thats why I have kept the homeline cupie. Only cost me 9.95 a month and means others can call me, especialy family in NZ. Because of the 3 in 1 bundle I have, I get great discounts and all up only pay a total of 90.00 a month for homeline, mobile and internet all wrapped up together. Had thought of chucking the homeline but for 9.95 I think its better to keep it and if I only had 2 in the bundle wouldn't get such good discounts anyway.

Info from Telstra shop was that Bigpond 'dongles' will not work in usb routers, and that I would have to buy a Telstra gateway modem.

Thanks Cupie and HappyW for your comments.... I'm only just starting to think this through and you both make valid points. My mobile is on a $49 "capped" plan ("capped" is a bit of a misnomer but that's another story) until July so that may also influence my decision. I also have calling number display that costs an extra $6 p. month but I find that useful. I think I'll check out the homeline plan that Marj (HW) is on in the meantime. As I say I'm still gathering my thoughts on this one and will be better placed after going and seeing Telstra. They have a shop in my local shopping centre. Jim

What do you mean by 6.00 a month for call number display Jim. On a mobile it automatically shows on the screen , no charge. That money could be paying for you homeline. You say your mobile is 49.00 capped plan, so is mine but with all the discounts only costs me 29.95, I get 400.00 free calls a month with that plus 200 mb which i never use anyway. I pay Homeline 9.95 after discounts Mobile 29.95 after discounts Internet 49.95 for 3 Gigs Total $89.85 after discounts

Sorry should have been clearer, the $6 for caller display is on my homeline.

Hi, We just moved all our communication from Optus to Telstra. We had no issue with Optus, except that they do not have a good if any service in Tasmania. We are going to Tassie end of Jany for 9 weeks, so we had to change.
We pay $107 P.M. which includes
Home line ... Internet broadband.... Mobile broadband ( Dongle) ... and
our 2 mobile phones. We can talk to each other for free on the mobiles.
Very rarely use mobiles for other calls.
Am I getting ripped of by Telstra. By the way this plan was about $25 month better than we were paying Optus. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Jaydee. Mine as above. But I see you have two mobiles and does that say you have two separate broadbands. If thats the case it could be a good deal. William the 3rd. Didn't know that, will look into it as may need it more when travelling to leave messages on line for family. Mind you have no idea how to use the interrnet connection on my mobile, have to get my daughter to show me.

I've now cut a better deal with Telstra.... not as good as some as I don't have Bigpond for my ISP. Still need to think through the logistics of this one but at this stage it doesn't appear to be worth the hassle to change over as I use a separate computer when on the road and it was getting all too complicated for my simple brain.

Thanks Terry for that info... As the data allowance on my mobile is now 1Gb (as pointed out by William of Orange, above (history buffs will get that one)) combined with a good rate from my current ISP there doesn't seem any point in changing. Jim

I'm so far out in the sticks my internet is via a satellite. I pay 19.95 per month for using the net and never have to pay more.
