Hi Ma,
When I was a kid at school we either sang "God Save The King" (King George) or "Song of Australia" written by an English immigrant author called Caroline Carleton and sang to the music by a German immigrant intellectual Carl Linger, both from South Australia. These are the words, if you google the title there is a play version of the song with music on the links that come up. From memory, we only ever sang the first verse :

We have a National Anthem, it's fine. The debate was settled a few decades back.
The examples above are no less trite than Advance Australia Fair.
It's time to move on and leave the cultural cringe behind us. Could you imagine USA or France changing their national anthems?

Maybe I should have stated that I had no intention of even suggesting that the National Anthem should be changed. This was just something I came across and it just appealed to me, so thought I would share it.
Think I will keep my likes and dislikes to myself in future!

Well they are going the right way to kill the forum off. As Grey Nomads we are capable of discussing a wide range of topics but there is at least one here who would prefer we didn't.

Hey Ma, I'd never heard of these songs. Not that you'd want to change the National Anthem, but I particularly like the chorus to the God Bless Australia one !!
As a G.N. I am pretty sure most of us like to discuss other things as well as the main like in our lives being G.Nomading. Pretty boring if we only had one subject allowed for discussion. (My view)

The national anthem is another one of those contentious subjects like the flag, immigration & politics that may be best left alone on this forum. People will always have (and are allowed to have) their own views on the subject & no one is really right or wrong.
I's ok to talk about the other things not connected to grey nomading if it is something you think is worth us all knowing or something you think others will enjoy or get a giggle from but all too often these subjects end up in useless arguing as seen on other forums

As a member of Sing australia, we regularly sing wonderful Australian songs, including "Shelter", "I Love a Sunburnt country", "Australia for Me", "I Am Australian", and I am often moved by words written both recently and long ago.
We also sing the National Anthem, and whatever we may think of it as a song, its still the National Anthem and we sing it with respect.

Same here Ma, no reason why we shouldn't be able to either (make other threads within reason). I am certainly not advocating any changes, the songs are part of our Australian History, especially the older versions which were around that we had to sing at school.

Firstly, apologies Elaine if I misinterpreted the purpose of your post, My mind-reading skills failed again.
I agree that this is primarily a forum about issues relevant to caravan and "RV" travel rather than other issues but the range of topics can still be broad rather than narrow. However contentious political issues such as Immigration or the Republic etc have the potential to be divisive and should be "off limits" for this forum.

If any of you listen to "Macca" on a Sunday morning, you will sometimes hear these wonderful old songs.
I'd never heard of some of them, 'till I met my last Ex, who was South Australian. I particularly like "The Song of Australia." I think Donald Smith used to sing that one.
Another one I like is "Arada".

Yes Macca On A Sunday (ABC) is great to listen to Sheba on a Sunday for anyone travelling around Oz with radio reception (and at home too), for those who don't know he travels Oz and does his show all around Oz in mostly small towns, with interviews of locals and Oz people from everywhere in Oz and overseas.
Sheba, The Song Of Australia was first sung on a recording (gramophone record) by Peter Dawson in 1933. He also sang other songs you may be interested in, google "Peter Dawson Songs Australia" and it will bring them up to listen to and also give the history etc. You will also see on the links a band version of the song played by The Royal Australian Navy.
